Saint Expédit is one of the most invoked figures. And for good reason, he is called upon not only by those seeking quick solutions but also by practitioners of esoteric arts for his power to unlock the most desperate situations. But who is he? Portrait.

1. Who is Saint Expédit?

According to some accounts, Saint Expédit was a Roman centurion, commander of the Fulminata legion, stationed in Armenia at the beginning of the 4th century. His name, "Expédit," means "quick" or "expeditious," an attribute that plays a role in his esoteric reputation.

One day, while still a pagan, Saint Expédit is said to have received a divine vision urging him to convert to Christianity. However, a crow, symbolizing procrastination, appeared crying "Cras, cras, cras" (tomorrow in Latin), trying to dissuade him from changing his faith. Resolute, Saint Expédit crushed the crow while proclaiming "Hodie" (today), thus affirming his immediate decision to convert.

Saint Expédit's conversion to Christianity marks the beginning of his spiritual journey and his entry into the pantheon of martyrs. As a Roman soldier, his conversion was not only a personal declaration of faith but an act of defiance against the Roman Empire, which was then staunchly pagan. Refusing to renounce his new faith, Saint Expédit was arrested, subjected to cruel tortures, and then beheaded. He stubbornly refused to deny Christ, even under the threat of death.

2. How is Saint Expédit depicted?

Saint Expédit is often depicted as a young man, usually dressed in the uniform of a Roman centurion, reflecting his supposed origin as a soldier of the Roman Empire. He wears a short tunic, a red cloak (or chlamys) draped over his shoulders, and sandals laced up to the knees, typical of Roman soldiers of the time.

Saint Expédit

One of the most distinctive symbols of Saint Expédit is the cross he holds in one hand, bearing the inscription Hodie. This cross is often raised high, signifying urgency and the need for immediate action.

Under his feet, Saint Expédit crushes a black crow. This symbol represents procrastination and indecision, which Saint Expédit overcomes with his determination and urgency to act.

In some depictions, Saint Expédit also holds a palm branch, symbolizing his martyrdom and spiritual triumph. The palm is often associated with Christian martyrs, signifying their victory over death and entry into eternal glory.

3. What are the powers of Saint Expédit?

Saint Expédit is venerated for his many attributed powers, making him especially valuable to believers in religious and esoteric fields. He is mainly recognized for his ability to provide quick solutions to urgent problems, unlocking complex situations and finding answers where other means fail. Saint Expédit is also invoked for protection against imminent dangers and perilous situations, offering swift help against physical, emotional, or spiritual threats. As the patron saint of desperate causes, he is sought by those in hopeless situations, seeking a miracle or divine intervention.

In esoteric circles, he is also credited with the power to speed up administrative, legal, and other procedures often hindered by bureaucracy. Additionally, students and professionals invoke Saint Expédit to achieve good academic results or professional promotions, considering him a powerful ally to see their efforts quickly rewarded.

In La Réunion, the Saint-Expédit church is the site of many stories of sudden healings, miraculous solutions to financial problems, and protection against natural disasters, attributed to his interventions.
