As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (specifically in the south of Finistère). It is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices, some more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish lesser-known legends from Breton history.
This week, I am telling you about a legend known throughout Brittany, that of the Bugul-noz...
In the depths of the Breton forests, far from the beaten paths, lives a solitary and mysterious creature known as the Bugul Noz. This name literally means "night shepherd" in Breton. The Bugul Noz is a frightening figure, a forest spirit who wanders endlessly, with the mission to protect nature and animals from nocturnal dangers while frightening humans with its appearances.
The Bugul Noz is often described as a large creature with frightening and distorted features. He wears a large hat "wider than a cartwheel" and a long white coat dragging on the ground, which partially hides him and adds to his terrifying appearance. His face is so hideous that even animals flee at the sight of him. Yet, despite his terrifying appearance, the Bugul Noz is not always malevolent. His heart is filled with sadness and loneliness, as he longs for company, but his appearance condemns him to an isolated existence.

The legend says that Bretons returning from plowing are likely to encounter him and dread this moment. The Bugul Noz often appears to nighttime travelers, hidden in the woods and paths. At midnight, the peak of his power, he sometimes wears a wolf’s skin to run through the night, thus increasing his terrifying aura. He also has the gift of metamorphosis, allowing him to transform into various creatures, like a horse, to surprise his victims.
When approached, the Bugul Noz seems to grow, becoming more and more imposing and terrifying, like in a nightmare. He is sometimes accompanied by Korrigans, those mischievous little elves, who sing their marching songs, adding a supernatural and unsettling dimension to his appearances.
Despite his unsettling nature, the Bugul Noz is deeply rooted in the protection of the forest and its inhabitants. He watches over the animals, protecting them from hunters and nocturnal predators, and sometimes even over lost travelers, keeping dangers away and guiding them to safety. His frightening appearances are often warnings for those who do not respect the forest and its mysteries.
There are also stories where the Bugul Noz helps those who get lost in the forest find their way back, although these people never see him directly. They only feel a presence and sometimes hear soothing whispers in the wind.
Be careful not to whistle at night, as this sound tends to make him lose his calm.
