In life, it sometimes happens that certain people have a harmful influence on our emotional, spiritual, or even physical well-being. Whether it involves toxic relationships, constant conflicts, or negative energies, it becomes necessary to protect ourselves in order to preserve our personal balance. In such cases, distancing ourselves from these individuals and taking steps to protect ourselves is essential. Among the most popular rituals is the freezer spell from Hoodoo magic, which is simple and (very) effective.
Why banish someone from your life?
Banishment in a spiritual or esoteric context is motivated by the need to protect yourself from the negative influences they may exert. This may manifest as toxic behavior, manipulation, or simply harmful energies that disturb a person’s emotional or spiritual balance. Banishment is not intended to cause harm, but to sever a harmful connection in order to regain inner peace. In white magic, this type of ritual is often viewed as a defensive measure—a way to preserve your well-being while avoiding destructive actions. It is about ending a negative influence, neutralizing harmful behavior, or distancing yourself from people whose presence has become burdensome or toxic.
How does this banishment work?
The freezer spell works primarily by relying on two key elements: its simplicity and the power of visualization. What makes this ritual so popular is that it requires very little material, only a piece of paper or another symbolic object. You do not need complex tools, just a name or an object connected to the person or energy you wish to banish. However, the effectiveness of this ritual depends largely on your ability to clearly visualize your intention and channel the energy needed to neutralize the negative influence.
Here is how it works: the chosen object—a piece of paper bearing the person’s name, a photograph, or another personal symbol known as a “taglock”—becomes a receptacle for the energy you wish to eliminate. You must visualize intensely what this object represents and associate it with the obstacle or harmful influence. This is the central focus of the ritual: through this visualization work, you embody the negative energy within this symbolic object. Then, by placing the object in the freezer, you freeze the influence in question, making it inert and unable to act against you. This freezing process symbolizes pausing or blocking the effects of that person or situation in your life.
Freezing banishment ritual
Because of its popularity, there are countless variations of this ritual. Here, I present the most “traditional” version from the Hoodoo tradition.
Required ingredients
You can find the ingredients on our Aeternum esoteric shop. In summary, you will need:
- 1 black-throughout candle
- 1 bottle of holy water
- 1 container (that can hold water)
- 1 sheet of parchment
- 1 writing quill
- 1 bottle of Dragon’s Blood magical ink

This ritual should be performed during the waning phase of the moon.
Steps of the banishment ritual
To perform this freezing banishment ritual, follow these detailed steps:

Form your circle: before beginning, create a protective circle around yourself. This helps concentrate the energies and protect you during the ritual.

Invoke Hecate: light a candle and invoke the goddess Hecate, known for her powers of protection and transition. Use this invocation: “O Hecate, goddess of renewal, help me follow my path by banishing what harms me.”

Write down what you wish to banish: take a piece of parchment or paper and clearly write down what you wish to get rid of—a person, a situation, or a negative influence. Say aloud: “XXX, by this act, I seal your words; may my will triumph over yours.”

Immerse and seal: dip the paper in holy water to symbolize the dissolution of this influence. Then place it in the container, fill it with water (not completely, to prevent it from bursting), and seal it tightly. This process symbolizes capturing and neutralizing the energy or person you are banishing.

End the ritual: close the circle and place the container in the freezer. This final action symbolically “freezes” the harmful influence and prevents it from having any hold over you.

Release the remains: when you feel that the ritual has achieved its purpose, remove the container from the freezer and dispose of the remains, either by dumping the contents in a distant place, burning the paper, or burying it.
There is no specific timeframe for seeing results; you will see and feel them intuitively (generally within one lunar cycle). Be sure to release the container once the ritual is complete to avoid unwanted effects.
