The 3-card reading is one of the simplest and most effective methods in the world of cartomancy, whether tarot or oracles. This method is appreciated for its simplicity and speed while offering surprising depth of analysis. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, the 3-card reading is an ideal tool to get clear and concise answers.

1. Purify the cards

Purifying the cards before a reading is always helpful to eliminate negative or residual energies. There are several classic purification methods:

  • By fumigation: pass the cards through the smoke of sage, cedar, or any other purifying incense. This ancient method is widely used to cleanse and raise the energy of the cards.

  • By crystal cluster: place a purifying crystal like amethyst or clear quartz on the deck of cards for a few hours. Crystals are known for their energetic properties that can revitalize the cards.

  • By the moon: exposing the cards to moonlight, especially during the full moon, is another natural purification method.

2. Define the question asked

Before starting a 3-card reading, you must formulate a clear and precise question. The clarity of the question directly influences the relevance and accuracy of the answers obtained through the cards.

Indeed:

  • A well-defined question helps focus energy and attention on a specific aspect of the querent's life. This helps avoid vague or ambiguous answers.

  • The cards respond based on the question asked. A clear question guides the reading and allows the cards to be interpreted in a specific context.

  • Formulating a precise question requires deep reflection on what you truly want to know. This encourages introspection and awareness of the querent's real concerns.

To formulate an effective question, I advise you to avoid closed questions (which require a simple "yes" or "no" answer) and favor open questions that explore the "how," "why," and "what are" influences or consequences.

For example, instead of asking "Will I find a job?", it is better to ask a question like "What are the obstacles affecting my job search and how can I overcome them?".

    3. Shuffle the cards

Generally, there are three ways to shuffle the cards before drawing:

Traditional Shuffle Hold the deck in your hands and shuffle them traditionally, as you would with a regular deck of cards. Do this several times to thoroughly shuffle the cards.
Fan Shuffle Spread the cards face down on a flat surface and shuffle them by moving them with your hands. Make sure all the cards are well mixed.
Cut Shuffle Once the cards are well shuffled, cut the deck into three distinct piles and gather them in a different order. Repeat this operation several times if necessary.

There is no method more effective than another; use the one you feel most comfortable with.

    4. Draw the cards

Like shuffling, you can choose one of these drawing methods, which follow the same logic:

Intuitive Method After shuffling the cards, fan them out face down in front of you. Pass your hand over the cards and choose those that intuitively attract you. Trust your instinct to select the cards.
Cutting Method Divide the deck into three piles after shuffling, then reform a single pile. Then, draw the cards from the top of the deck in the order required by the cross spread.
Picking Method Hold the deck face down in your hands and draw the cards from the top of the deck, one by one, in the order required for the cross spread. You can also draw cards from different parts of the deck by "picking" them according to your intuition.

    5. Lay out the cards in threes

After thoroughly shuffling the deck, choose three cards following your intuition. You can draw them from the top of the deck or select them from a spread of face-down cards. Once the cards are selected, lay them out in a horizontal line in front of you, from left to right.

Card 1 The past This card represents past influences, previous events, or circumstances that led to the current situation. It may reveal lessons learned, significant experiences, or past factors that continue to affect the present.
Card 2 The present The central card symbolizes the current state of things. It shows the present energies, immediate conditions, or the querent’s current situation. This card is the focal point of the spread and offers a snapshot of what is happening here and now.
Card 3 The future The card on the right indicates future influences, probable developments, or potential outcomes. It may suggest directions to take, upcoming events, or future prospects based on the current situation and actions taken.

    6. Interpret the cards

Once the cards are laid out, take the time to examine each card individually in the context of its specific position. Reflect on how each card relates to the question asked. Consider the symbols, images, and messages of each card, and note how they apply to the past, present, and future.

    7. One last tip

Like any practice, the three-card spread requires training. The first results may be difficult to interpret, but it will become clearer over time.

You can also keep a reading journal to improve your card reading skills and track your intuitive development.
