Born in the 19th century, Mage Edmond (real name Jules Charles Ernest Billaudot) is particularly known for having contributed to the popularization and evolution of the Tarot of Marseille and the creation of one of the most famous oracles still considered a reference today: the Belline oracle. He developed his own card reading system, which is said to have influenced other practitioners and contributed to the rise of modern tarot reading. He was also a highly sought-after advisor to the greatest figures of his time. Let’s discover his story together.

1. The 19th Century Historical Context

The 19th century stands as a period of radical transformation in European history and, more broadly, worldwide. It is an era marked by the industrial revolution, colonial expansion, political upheavals, and social changes. Science and technology made great leaps forward, challenging traditional beliefs and opening the way to new perspectives on the world and humanity. However, paradoxically, this same era also saw a marked resurgence of interest in occultism, esotericism, and divinatory arts.

At the heart of this century of light and technical progress, society sought answers to questions that science could not resolve. Esotericism and divination offered alternatives, ways to understand the invisible, human destiny beyond materialistic explanations. It is in this context that tarot reading and cartomancy experienced a true golden age. Esoteric salons opened in major European capitals, attracting intellectuals, artists, and members of the aristocracy, all fascinated by the promises of hidden knowledge and secret powers.

Mage Edmond appeared on this scene at this key moment, with his innovative methods and deep understanding of the tarot’s arcana, responding to this collective thirst for exploration of the soul and the future. His approach, both practical and philosophical, was firmly rooted in the needs and curiosities of his time, making him a major figure in the 19th-century esoteric revival.

2. The Life of Mage Edmond

2.1. A Stable Youth

Mage Edmond’s life began in the shadows, surrounded by a hint of mystery, as befits a future master of the occult. Born in Poilly-sur-Serein on August 17, 1829, during a period of social and political upheaval, the precise details of his birth and childhood remain unclear. What is known is that he grew up in a family environment which, although not directly rooted in esoteric practices, instilled in him a deep curiosity about the mysteries of the universe and an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

Accounts of his early years depict a young man eager to understand the hidden laws governing the world. This quest led him to study a variety of disciplines, from alchemy to philosophy, including early forms of psychology. It was in this intellectual crucible that his interest in cartomancy awakened, a still little-explored field but promising profound revelations about the human soul and the very fabric of destiny.

2.2. The Rise to Prominence

Mage Edmond’s rise from curious apprentice to iconic figure in cartomancy did not happen overnight. It was the result of years of dedication, practice, and an almost supernatural (or miraculous) ability to read a depth in symbols and signs that few could perceive. His encounter with the Tarot of Marseille marked a decisive turning point in his life. Fascinated by the symbolic richness and complexity of this deck, he devoted himself to studying its arcana, deciphering its mysteries, and reinventing its reading methods.

2.3. Advisor to the Greats

This passion opened the doors of high society of the time, with the opening of his own office in the heart of Paris, at 30 rue de la Fontaine in the 9th arrondissement of the capital. He was sought after and received notable figures, high-ranking politicians, as well as intellectuals and leaders such as Alexandre Dumas, Auguste Renoir, Victor Hugo, and Napoleon III. With growing success, he moved to the very chic 8th arrondissement to be even closer to his clientele.

3. The Creation of the Belline Oracle

The Belline Oracle is a fascinating deck of divinatory cards named after Belline, a famous 20th-century seer, but whose roots go back to Mage Edmond of the 19th century. The latter developed a unique card system, incorporating astrological and symbolic elements, intended to deepen the practice of divination.

The Belline Oracle consists of 52 cards, each bearing symbols and images representing cosmic forces, astrological principles, and aspects of the human condition. Seven additional cards, representing the seven planets of traditional astrology, complete the set, bringing the total to 59 cards. Each card is charged with deep meanings, offering a wide range of possible interpretations depending on its position and context in a spread.

4. The Troubling Predictions of Mage Edmond

Several anecdotes illustrate Mage Edmond’s life, each contributing to building his legend. Among them, his prediction of the First World War, the future success of Alexandre Dumas, and Victor Hugo’s exile. He is also said to have helped members of a family find, thanks to the cards, a treasure hidden in an old noble residence. These facts only reinforce the extraordinary talent of the mage.

5. Mage Edmond’s Legacy Today

Before falling into obscurity, Mage Edmond’s oracle was brought to light by the seer Belline, making it today one of the most famous and reliable oracles in the world.

Mage Edmond died on May 20, 1881, in Flogny-la-Chapelle, and his grave is visible in the Poilly-sur-Serein cemetery, where admirers place flowers on the stone marking his resting place.
