The Fairy Viviane

The Fairy Viviane

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (in the south of Finistère to be precise). And it is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish lesser-known legends from Breton history.

Let's discover together the legend of the Fairy Viviane (also called Nimuë, Niniane, or the Lady of the Lake depending on the version), with whom Merlin the Enchanter fell madly in love... to his downfall. Let's go!

The Fairy Viviane

The birth and youth of the Fairy Viviane are not really known. She was the daughter of a small-statured but very beautiful king who lived near Lake Diana in Brittany. She was named Viviane because of her life closely linked to water, and she possessed uncommon gifts of clairvoyance and magic.

Moving forward in time, in the heart of the Brocéliande forest, inhabited by creatures and legends. Darnantes and Briosque, towns sheltering dragons and other fairy beings, were the stage for the exploits and kindness of the Fairy Viviane.

It is in this setting that Viviane, moved by the tragic fate of young Lancelot, orphaned of his father, King Ban of Bénoïc, decided to act. King Ban had fallen in battle during the invasion of his castle, seeing his city of Trèbes reduced to ashes. Viviane took Lancelot from his surviving mother, who died of grief, to protect him from the dangers of the human world, taking him to the depths of her Lake, also known as Lake Diana, where another destiny awaited him. There, she raised him far from turmoil and tragedy, teaching him arts, letters, and chivalrous virtues, shaping the soul and arm of Arthur’s future champion.

When Lancelot reached the age of 18, ready to embrace his destiny, Viviane guided him to Camelot. There, within Arthur’s court, he was knighted and introduced to the illustrious members of the Round Table. Lancelot thus became the paragon of chivalry, Viviane’s pride, and a symbol of the Arthurian ideal.

Meanwhile, after the death of Ygraine (the mother of the Fairy Morgane, half-sister of King Arthur), Viviane watched over her, passing on the knowledge of the ancients and the mysteries of magic. Viviane and Morgane then took completely opposite paths. While Morgane, over time, came to desire the downfall of her brother Arthur and Queen Guinevere, Viviane remained a ruthless protector of the court, the kingdom, and the ideals Arthur embodied to fulfill the mission of her existence (know that the word "fairy" comes from the word "destiny," so she lives to accomplish a destiny, no matter the cost).

But that’s not all: Merlin fell madly in love with Viviane. He decided to reveal to her the secrets of the universe and the mysteries of magic. Viviane is both curious and cautious, fascinated by the knowledge and power Merlin can offer her, but also aware of the dangers this entails. She becomes his best student, absorbing his teachings while cultivating a closeness that quickly goes beyond simple master-student ties. Merlin, who had the reputation of being an untamable loner, unexpectedly fell under her charm.

As proof of his love, he built her a sumptuous crystal palace beneath the waters of a lake (known today as Lake Comper). Don’t try to find it: this castle is imperceptible to humans and only visible to fairies.

However, the dynamic between them gradually turns into a game of power and control. It should be known that the Fairy Viviane is determined, even ruthless when she must accomplish a quest. Thus, when she felt that Merlin had fulfilled his duty to Arthur, she gradually distanced him from the Round Table to keep him by her side. This desire then turned into an obsession. Mastering the knowledge of the powerful magician, she trapped him within 5 circles of air in the heart of the Brocéliande forest. A rather strange fact: the place where Merlin is supposed to be (sometimes renamed as Merlin’s tomb over time) is represented by two rocks leaning against each other, said to be witnesses of magical waves escaping from them. It is said since then that Merlin exists in another form, neither truly dead nor truly alive...

Fairy Viviane

As for Viviane, it is not really known what became of her. After the disappearance of Arthur, the Round Table, the discovery of the Grail (which will be the subject of another legend), and thus her reason for existing, it is said she decided to disappear with her kind never to appear again.

Thus ends the life of Viviane, rather tragic and far from the legend we may have known in more popular works....
