The Dance of the Will-o'-the-Wisps

The Dance of the Will-o'-the-Wisps

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (specifically in the south of Finistère). It is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices, some more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

These mysterious lights float above the marshes and misty moors and are considered playful spirits or benevolent souls rather than omens of misfortune.

The dance of the will-o'-the-wisps

The legend says that will-o'-the-wisps are the souls of people who died prematurely or who did not receive a proper burial. Unable to rest in peace, they transform into dancing lights to haunt damp and remote places. Contrary to the idea that these spirits seek to mislead travelers, the Breton version attributes more positive, though capricious, intentions to them.

Will-o'-the-wisps are described as glowing points of light shifting between pale blue and sparkling white, dancing with the wind. On calm nights, near marshes or moors, villagers say they have seen these lights twirling in circles, as if performing a ritual dance. It is said that this dance is an invitation to travelers in distress, a way to catch their attention and offer them a way out when lost in hostile terrain.

To receive their help, it is said a traveler must offer a small gift: a flat stone or a coin. If the offering is accepted, the lights intensify, dance for a while around the person, then slowly move, tracing a luminous path to a safe place. But beware those who neglect this exchange: the will-o'-the-wisps can vanish in a breath, leaving the unfortunate one in darkness and the dangers of the marshes.

A tip: always carry a coin in your pocket!
