IN SUMMARY...
1. What is a Pentacle? |
As a complement to my article on pentacles and pentagrams, another confusion sometimes exists between two magical symbols: the pentacle and the pantacle. No, this is not a typo (in fact, spell checkers do not recognize the word pantacle), but two completely distinct symbols even if at first glance the difference is rather subtle. Explanations.
1. What is a Pentacle?
The pentacle is one of the best-known esoteric symbols. It is distinguished by its characteristic shape: a five-pointed star (the pentagram) inscribed in a circle.

Each of its points represents one of the fundamental elements of nature: earth, air, fire, water, and spirit (or ether), which is often considered the fifth element linking the others. The circle surrounding this star symbolizes unity, infinity, and continuity, thus harmoniously connecting all the elements together.
It is used to draw sacred circles, invoke elemental energies, or protect a ritual space. When creating a magic circle, the pentacle can be physically drawn on the ground with salt, traced in the air with an athame, or visualized mentally to establish a protective zone. This circle creates a barrier between the physical world and the spiritual world, ensuring the practitioner's safety during rituals.
The pentacle is also used as a talisman or protective amulet, or as an altar plate.
2. What is a Pantacle?
The pantacle is a magical tool whose main function is to channel and focus specific energies within spiritual or esoteric practices. Unlike the pentacle, which is specifically a five-pointed star surrounded by a circle, the pantacle can take various forms and include a wide variety of symbols. It can be circular, square, triangular, or any other shape, depending on the intention and tradition using it.

The term "pantacle" refers to any object engraved or inscribed with sacred symbols, used for magical purposes. These symbols can include letters, numbers, drawings, geometric figures, or specific representations intended to invoke or represent certain forces or entities. It requires extensive knowledge of invocation or evocation seals, and mastery of High Magic.
Originating from medieval traditions, the pantacle could be engraved on animal skins, wood, but also lead or mercury, especially for planetary pantacles.
3. Why is there confusion between Pentacle and Pantacle?
The first reason is primarily phonetic. The terms "pentacle" and "pantacle" are very similar. Since much magical knowledge was transmitted orally, it is possible that the confusion started this way.
It must also be said that esoteric traditions, such as Kabbalah, Hermeticism, and Wicca, share some responsibility. In some of these traditions, the terms are used interchangeably or with slightly different meanings, which has led to a blurred understanding of their differences.
4. Summary of the differences between a Pentacle and a Pantacle
To summarize what we have just said, here is a table:
| Pentacle | Pantacle | |
| Shape | It is specifically a five-pointed star (pentagram) encircled. This shape is standardized and represents a fixed symbol used mainly to invoke the elements and offer protection. | This term refers to a magical object that can take many forms, ranging from circles to squares, including more complex shapes. The pantacle is often a support for various symbols, numbers, letters, or geometric figures, and its shape is not restricted to the pentagram. |
| Symbolism | The symbolism of the pentacle is closely linked to the five natural elements (earth, air, fire, water, spirit) and spiritual protection. The circle surrounding the pentagram symbolizes unity and continuity, encapsulating the elements in a sacred space. | The pantacle, on the other hand, is a more versatile tool whose symbolism varies depending on the inscriptions it bears. It can represent cosmic forces, specific entities, or abstract concepts such as wisdom or healing, according to the symbols used. |
| Use | It is mainly used in rituals to protect, invoke the elements, and maintain energetic balance. It is often a symbol of faith in Wicca and other pagan traditions. | The pantacle is a magical tool used to channel specific energies, invoke forces or entities, or as a protective amulet. Its use is more flexible and adapts to the specific needs of the ritual or situation. |

I hope you will now be able to distinguish these two traditional symbols!
