The Nephilim are rather enigmatic beings mentioned in various religious and mythological texts. Mainly known from the Hebrew Bible, the Nephilim are often described as giants or beings of extraordinary stature, endowed with supernatural powers. Their exact nature and origin remain subject to interpretation but they still fascinate today.

1. The origins of the Nephilim

The term "Nephilim" comes from the Hebrew נְפִילִים (Nefilim), which is often translated as "those who have fallen" or "the fallen ones." The word derives from the Hebrew root נָפַל (nafal), meaning "to fall." This etymology suggests a celestial origin for these beings, indicating that they might be fallen angels or entities who have fallen from a higher state. Translations and interpretations vary, but the central idea remains that of creatures who have undergone some kind of decline or fall.

The most famous mention of the Nephilim is found in the book of Genesis (6:1-4), where they are described as the children of the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men." Another reference appears in the book of Numbers (13:33), where they are mentioned by the spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan, describing the Nephilim as giants.

The Book of Enoch, an apocryphal text not included in the Jewish or Christian biblical canon, offers a more detailed description of the Nephilim. According to this text, the Nephilim are the descendants of fallen angels, called the "Watchers," who disobeyed God by uniting with human women. The Book of Jubilees and other apocryphal writings also provide additional information about their nature and deeds.

Similar figures to the Nephilim appear in various world mythologies. For example, the giants and titans of Greek mythology share common characteristics with the Nephilim, often being beings of great stature and prodigious strength, born from the union of gods and mortals. Likewise, in Mesopotamian mythology, the Anunnaki are sometimes compared to the Nephilim due to their divine status and interactions with humans.

2. Descendants of demons?

The Nephilim are described in several religious and apocryphal texts as descendants of angels and mortals. This hybrid origin is one of the most intriguing aspects of their legend. According to the Book of Genesis (6:1-4), the "sons of God" took the "daughters of men" as wives and begot the Nephilim. The term "sons of God" is often interpreted as referring to angelic or celestial beings, implying a union between divine entities and humans, but their union with mortals suggests they were fallen and thus became demons.

The Book of Enoch, a particularly detailed apocryphal text on this subject, offers an even clearer vision of this union. According to this text, a group of angels called the "Watchers" disobeyed God by descending to Earth and taking human women as wives. From this union were born the Nephilim, described as giants with extraordinary powers. The Watchers also taught humans various forbidden knowledge, thus contributing to the corruption of humanity.

The Nephilim, as descendants of these forbidden unions, are often associated with violence and depravity. They are described as violent and tyrannical beings, using their strength and powers to dominate humans and sow chaos. Their existence is often seen as a threat to divine order and to humanity itself, which justifies, in many accounts, their annihilation by the Flood.

3. The appearance of the Nephilim

The Nephilim, in the various traditions where they appear, are described as beings of imposing stature and often fearsome appearance. Their physical appearance is one of the most striking aspects of these creatures. Often depicted as giants, they are much taller than ordinary humans, reaching prodigious heights that inspire both fear and fascination. This colossal size is generally associated with extraordinary physical strength, allowing them to perform feats that humans could never accomplish.

In addition to their impressive size, the Nephilim are often described with powerful and imposing physical features. They possess developed musculature and superhuman strength, enabling them to triumph in epic battles and dominate the landscapes they inhabit. Some descriptions go further, adding supernatural traits such as glowing eyes or a terrifying aura, emphasizing their semi-divine or angelic nature. Their appearance is not only intimidating; it is a living testimony to their celestial origin and their fall.

4. Omens of the Flood?

The Book of Giants is a little-known Jewish apocryphal text that expands on the stories from the books of Enoch and Jubilees, focusing specifically on the history of the Nephilim before the Flood. This text details the events surrounding these hybrid beings, their fate, and their interactions with angels and humans.

Among the Nephilim mentioned are Mahway, son of the angel Barakel, as well as Ohya and Hahya, sons of Semiaza. These giants were the protagonists of allegorical dreams foretelling the imminent destruction of the world. In one of these dreams, Mahway saw a tablet submerged in water, then emerging with only three names inscribed on it, those of Noah and his sons. This dream symbolized their survival after the Flood. Another dream showed an uprooted tree, except for three roots still anchored in the ground, again symbolizing the preservation of Noah and his family.

The three giants shared their visions with the other Nephilim, but the latter remained skeptical and incredulous. However, these prophetic dreams multiplied, and other Nephilim were also struck by apocalyptic visions. Terrified by these omens, the Nephilim sent Mahway to seek Enoch's help to interpret their dreams. Mahway "flew" across the world to meet Enoch, who agreed to intercede on their behalf with God.

Enoch responded by sending them a tablet confirming their imminent death due to their sins but offering them a chance to repent. Despite this warning, the Nephilim remained skeptical and decided not to trust God, preferring to ignore the opportunity to repent.

On the other hand, just after the mention of the Nephilim in the Holy Scriptures, it is said:

« The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. The Lord said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the earth, from man to animals, creeping things, and birds of the heavens; for I regret that I have made them." » (Genesis 6:5-7).

Faced with this widespread corruption, God decided to purify the Earth by a flood. This cataclysm engulfed all life, including the Nephilim, except Noah, his family, and the animals he took with him on the ark, according to divine instructions (Genesis 6:11-22). This divine decision highlights the extent of human depravity at the time and the need for radical intervention to restore order on Earth.

5. What became of the Nephilim?

It seems that God ended this situation by isolating the demons who had united with human women. Jude 6 states:

« And the angels who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness for judgment on the great day. »

It is obvious that not all demons are "chained" today, so this passage seems to refer to a specific group of demons who committed particularly serious sins after their initial fall. It is likely that these demons are those who united with human women, and that they are now "eternally chained" to prevent other demons from committing similar acts.

Thus ends the portrait of these mysterious entities. The mystery remains complete, which has sparked all the interest and curiosity around them.
