6. How to interpret aspects in a natal chart?

We all know astrology, at least on the surface. But when you dig a little deeper, you realize it is a rather complex practice and thus difficult to fully master. This is especially true for aspects in astrology, that is, the positions of planets relative to each other which cause very different influences in a birth chart. They are known as square, opposition, conjunction, sextile, and many others. Explanation.

1. Definition of astrological aspects

In astrology, aspects refer to the angular relationships between planets in a natal chart, forming specific links that influence the interpretation of a person's character and life dynamics. These aspects occur when two planets form a precise angle between them, thus affecting how their energies interact. They can strengthen or weaken the natural qualities of these planets depending on whether they are harmonious or tense.

Aspects are mainly divided into two categories: major aspects and minor aspects. Major aspects have a more visible and dynamic impact on a person's life, while minor aspects are more subtle but can add important nuances to the chart interpretation.

2. How are astrological aspects determined?

To understand how to determine aspects in astrology, you first need to imagine the zodiac as a circle divided into 360 degrees. Each planet in the natal chart (sky map at the time of birth) occupies a specific point on this circle. An astrological aspect forms when two planets are separated by a certain angle, measured in degrees.

The work is much simpler today, and you can know your natal chart as well as the positions of the planets using a birth chart generator, of which there are several available online.

3. Major aspects and their influence

Understanding astrological aspects

Major aspects in astrology are important connections between planets, playing a central role in the dynamics of a birth chart. They reveal how different planetary energies interact, influencing behaviors, talents, and challenges in a person's life. These aspects can indicate forces of harmony or tension, shaping the individual's experiences and motivations. Their role is to express the fundamental relationships between planetary energies, creating either challenges to overcome or opportunities to harness for personal growth.

3.1. The conjunction (0°)

conjunction

The conjunction is a powerful aspect formed when two planets are positioned very close to each other in a birth chart, at 0°. This merges their energies and intensifies their respective influence, often creating new potential or synergy. This blend of energies can be harmonious or tense, depending on the planets involved. A conjunction can amplify the positive qualities of each planet, but if the energies are incompatible, it can also cause friction. Conjunctions are dynamic and often focus their influence on a particular area of life.

3.2. The opposition (180°)

opposition

The opposition is a major aspect where two planets are positioned opposite each other in the zodiac, at 180°. This aspect creates polarity between the two planets, symbolizing a pull or tension between opposing energies. The opposition often pushes toward seeking balance and complementarity. The energies of the two planets are in contradiction, requiring compromises to avoid extreme reactions. Although this aspect can generate frustration, it encourages reflection and adaptation, allowing for significant evolution and personal development.

3.3. The square (90°)

square

The square is a dynamic aspect often seen as challenging because it forms when two planets are 90° apart. This positioning generates tension or conflict between the two planetary energies, creating obstacles or blockages. However, squares also encourage action and change. They force individuals to face challenges and work hard to overcome tensions. This process, although sometimes uncomfortable, is necessary for growth and development. The square is thus seen as a catalyst for personal transformation.

3.4. The trine (120°)

trine

The trine is considered one of the most harmonious aspects. Formed when two planets are 120° apart, it facilitates smooth and natural cooperation between them. Energies flow freely, bringing talents, opportunities, and growth with little resistance. The trine often creates ease in the areas associated with the planets, allowing one to benefit from their potential without much effort. However, this aspect, although harmonious, can also lead to complacency if the individual does not actively take advantage of the opportunities it presents.

3.5. The sextile (60°)

sextile

The sextile is a favorable aspect, but less powerful than the trine. It forms when two planets are 60° apart, creating an opening for opportunities or talents to develop. Unlike the trine, the sextile requires conscious effort to be fully utilized. It does not generate energy as easily accessible but offers chances for growth and improvement if the individual takes the initiative. This aspect represents moments of learning and development through moderate but positive actions.

4. Minor aspects and their influence

4.1. The quincunx (150°)

The quincunx is a minor aspect formed when two planets are 150° apart. This aspect is often associated with a subtle imbalance that can create a feeling of mismatch or incompatibility between the two planetary energies. Unlike major aspects, the quincunx does not cause open conflict but can create internal tensions that require subtle adjustments. This aspect reflects difficulty in reconciling two parts of oneself or two areas of life, often forcing compromises or changes to find harmony. It is an aspect that calls for a gradual reconciliation between apparently irreconcilable energies.

4.2. The semi-square (45°)

The semi-square is a minor aspect formed by a 45° angle between two planets. Although less intense than a square, it creates a persistent and moderate tension. This tension is not always obvious, but it can cause constant irritation that forces long-term adjustments. The semi-square can symbolize subtle blockages or challenges that, although minor, require attention to prevent them from growing over time. This type of aspect reminds us that even minor tensions can, over time, lead to significant developments.

4.3. The sesquiquadrate (135°)

The sesquiquadrate, also called the square and a half, is a 135° aspect that shares some similarities with the square (90°), but in a less obvious way. It represents obstacles that are not immediately visible but often manifest as recurring patterns or negative habits. This type of aspect requires conscious reflection to recognize and overcome the patterns that hinder personal growth. Although less intense than a square, the sesquiquadrate can still cause frustrations if the necessary adjustments are not made.

5. The major planetary configurations

Warning, it gets complicated! A configuration is an association of several aspects. It would be very difficult to list all possible configurations. So, we will explain the major configurations.

5.1. The T-square

The T-square

The T-square is a powerful configuration formed when three planets are involved in two squares and one opposition. This creates a "T"-shaped triangle, where one planet, called the "apex," receives the tensions from the others. This configuration generates great tension and often requires specific action on the planet at the apex to resolve challenges. The T-square is an aspect that pushes the individual to face conflicts or blockages but can also be a source of dynamic energy and transformation. Attention is focused on the apex aspect, as this is where the greatest potential for change or evolution lies.

5.2. The grand trine

Grand trine

The grand trine forms when three planets are connected by trines, creating a perfect triangle in the natal chart. It is often associated with great natural harmony and a smooth flow of energies between the planets. However, although this configuration symbolizes balance and ease, it can also lead to excessive comfort, preventing the individual from pushing beyond limits. The grand trine offers natural talents and opportunities but requires conscious effort to avoid falling into complacency.

5.3. The cross square (or grand cross)

The cross square (or grand cross)

The cross square, or grand cross, is a very powerful and dynamic configuration where four planets form two oppositions and four squares, creating a cross in the natal chart. This configuration generates great tension and requires constant action. Individuals with a grand cross in their chart often face intense challenges but also possess an exceptional ability to evolve and transform. The grand cross represents growth potential through effort and managing internal and external tensions.

6. How to interpret aspects in a natal chart?

6.1. Dynamic and harmonious aspects: the necessary balance

Aspects in astrology are generally interpreted in two ways: so-called "dynamic" aspects (such as squares and oppositions) and "harmonious" aspects (such as trines and sextiles). Although dynamic aspects are often seen as challenging, they play an essential role in personal growth. Squares and oppositions introduce tensions that force the individual to confront weaknesses or resolve internal or external conflicts. It is through these challenges that strengths and skills develop to evolve. These aspects create movement and prevent stagnation, thus becoming a driver of transformation and learning. On the other hand, harmonious aspects bring fluidity and ease but can sometimes lead to complacency or passivity if not actively engaged.

6.2. Aspects between personal and transpersonal planets

The impact of aspects between personal planets (which have a direct influence: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) and transpersonal planets (which have a general or generational influence: Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) is particularly significant. Personal planets influence personality traits, emotions, and daily behaviors, while transpersonal planets symbolize collective forces and generational cycles. Aspects between these two types of planets show how individual challenges fit into broader contexts, often linked to societal or spiritual transformations. For example, an interaction between Mars and Uranus could indicate sudden changes in personal actions influenced by social or technological revolutions. These aspects often reveal lessons to be learned on a collective scale, touching on forces larger than the individual.

6.3. Karmic Aspects

In karmic astrology (reincarnation and soul evolution through different lives), aspects play a key role in identifying lessons to learn and unresolved experiences from past lives. Squares and oppositions, especially between the Lunar Nodes, Saturn, and Pluto, are often seen as karmic markers. They indicate challenges or repetitive situations that the individual must face in this life to resolve past patterns. Harmonious aspects, like trines, can indicate talents or skills acquired in past lives, bringing natural ease in certain areas of life. Understanding these aspects helps identify life missions and healing areas to address for spiritual progress.

Here is this file on astrological aspects, which I imagine might be a bit difficult to grasp. But by rereading and practicing, it will all become crystal clear! And if you want to explore this topic further, you can check out our astrology section in our esoteric bookstore.
