Divination is a rich and vast world, made up of methods that vary in complexity depending on cultural contexts. Through our esoteric shop, we know the tarot, the crystal ball, the pendulum, or the cowrie shells, but in fact, there are dozens or even hundreds of others. Among them, matchstick reading is particularly appreciated for its simplicity and accessibility using an everyday object. But how do you cast the matchsticks? And how do you interpret them? Answers in this article.

A brief history of matchstick divination

Matchstick divination, although less known than other divinatory practices, is actually part of the practice called acutomancy, a method using pointed objects (mainly pins and nails). In ancient Japan, pins were considered prophetic symbols: on one hand, Shintoism holds that everyday objects can be inhabited by spirits (called kami), and points especially concentrate intentions due to their shape.

Around 1600, ladies of the Japanese imperial court scattered pins on their mirrors during full moon nights, a ritual intended either to influence the hearts of their lovers or to cast spells on rivals.

At the beginning of the 20th century, this practice was adapted... in Brittany, using matchsticks instead of pins. Why Brittany? There is no formal proof, but exchanges between Europe and Japan intensified from the 19th century by sea, which may have allowed the transmission of these rituals. That would explain it.

What is matchstick divination?

The process involves taking nine matchsticks, one of which is cut in half, holding them in your hand to focus, then dropping them without any particular direction. The interpretation is based on the arrangement of the matchsticks; you will find the correspondences further down in this article.

Today there are two main drawing methods: casting on a white sheet (for general questions), and casting into a container of water (to find out if you are or are not the victim of the evil eye). Both methods can be complementary, or you can favor one over the other depending on your goal.

How to perform the matchstick ritual?

As indicated above, I will present the two main methods.

Performing the matchstick ritual in water

 You will need for this ritual:

• 2 flawless matchsticks
• A container filled with clear water

To perform the matchstick ritual in water, start by filling a transparent glass with clear water. Then take one matchstick in each hand and concentrate intensely on the question or doubt that concerns you, asking yourself if there could be a negative or harmful influence around you. Once you are ready, gently and simultaneously place the two matchsticks on the surface of the water, without touching the water and making sure to let them float freely without interfering with their natural movements.

Observe the behavior of the matchsticks:

• If the matchsticks stay apart from each other, it suggests the absence of harmful influences.

• If the matchsticks come closer and end up touching, it indicates the presence of negative energies that may affect you.

• If the matchsticks cross, you are the target of the evil eye and it is advisable to prepare protection (ritual, talisman).

Performing the matchstick ritual on a sheet

You will need for this ritual:

• 9 flawless matchsticks
• A white sheet of paper

Once the materials are ready, place the sheet on a flat and stable surface. Then hold the matchsticks in your hand for one minute, concentrating on the question or subject that concerns you. When you are ready, naturally drop the matchsticks onto the sheet without giving them any particular direction.

You can refer to the figures above to interpret the positions of your draw. However, the result is sometimes not so clear.

In that case, the interpretation is based on their arrangement: a horizontal matchstick represents an inevitable fate, while a curve indicates delays or temporary obstacles. If the matchsticks form a broken line, it suggests upcoming travels or changes. Parallel aligned matchsticks are a sign of good business or harmony, while oblique matchsticks warn of health disorders or imbalances.

The first draws may be confusing or even unreadable: this is normal. This type of divination requires concentration and practice before the messages become clearer to you.
