The Lanleff Fountain

2 min read

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small company based in Brittany (in southern Finistère, to be precise). And it is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices that are more or less familiar (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to shed light on our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

Once again, as last week, we remain in northern Finistère to discover the mystery of Lanleff's circular pink-granite temple, whose origin is the subject of several theories. But we will be focusing especially on its fountain, which is said to have been involved in a bargain with Lucifer.

According to this story, a poor and repulsive woman made a pact with the devil: her child in exchange for gold coins. Lucifer, always ready to strike a deal (and above all to collect souls), accepted the offer. He placed a handful of burning gold coins on the rim of the fountain. Immediately, he seized the child and disappeared.

The Lanleff Fountain

The unworthy mother, eager to recover her booty, reached out toward the coins but was severely burned. The coins had just emerged from the flames of the realm of Hell. And yes, the devil isn't called the Evil One for nothing...

With a cry of pain, she dropped the precious coins, which then became embedded for eternity in the granite of the rim.

The Lanleff Fountain

Since then, it has been said that simply pouring a little water over this rim will make 14 coins embedded in the stone appear, silent witnesses to this fateful pact. But beware of temptation...

See you next week for another legend!
