IN SUMMARY...
1. The Selaginella lepidophylla |
Under the name Rose of Jericho, two very different plants are grouped together, which are often confused. They share the same symbol of rebirth but come from different places, react differently, and do not have exactly the same uses in magic. Knowing them allows you to choose the one that best fits your intention.
1. The Selaginella lepidophylla
This plant comes from the desert of Mexico and the southern United States. It appears as a very dense dry ball, with fine, brown leaves and a compact appearance. When it comes into contact with water, it opens in a spiral, forming an almost round and flattened structure. It does not really turn green, or only very slightly, but its movement is quick, visible within the first hours.
It is the most common in esoteric shops. It withstands many opening cycles well, does not decompose easily, and is perfectly suited for rituals of prosperity, purification, and energy return. It acts quickly, like a trigger for movement, a starting fire.
2. Anastatica hierochuntica
This plant comes from the arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa. It is rarer, more fragile, and often larger. When dry, it looks like a cluster of tangled stems, almost star-shaped. Its opening is less spectacular, more discreet, and it never becomes completely green. It opens gently, sometimes incompletely, and remains very light, almost airy.
It is used in traditions related to protection, faith, and family blessing. It is found in some Christian rituals, sometimes associated with novenas or prayers. It acts as a discreet presence, a watchful energy, more inward than dynamic.
3. Which one to choose based on your work?
If you want to work on a quick change, material opening, or direct purification, the Selaginella is more suitable. It is resilient, easy to reuse, and clearly reacts to water and intention.
If your work is more spiritual, focused on prayer, patience, or honoring an ancient connection, Anastatica may be a better fit. It requires more gentleness, more silent presence, but it carries ancient wisdom.
Knowing the difference between the two Roses of Jericho means no longer looking for a miracle in the gesture. It means choosing the right ally for the right path. And in this choice, your ritual finds its accuracy.
