What is the difference between palo santo sticks, chips, or oil?

IN THE SUMMARY...

1. Palo santo sticks
2. Palo santo chips
3. Palo santo essential oil

Palo santo comes in several forms, each with its own way of acting, texture, duration, and intensity. You don’t choose a format at random. You choose it based on what you want to do: purify a space, work on yourself, accompany an object, or simply create a suitable atmosphere.

The wood does not lose its vibration when changing form. It changes rhythm, reach, and nuance.

1. Palo santo sticks

This is the most well-known and widely used form. You hold the stick in your hand, light it, let the flame go out, and use the warm smoke to purify a place, a body, or an object. The stick burns slowly, in several sessions. It can last weeks, even months.

It is perfect for regular cleansings, protection rituals, or to open an energetic space before magical or spiritual work. Its smoke is ample, comforting, and easy to control.

2. Palo santo chips

The chips allow for a more intense and occasional use. They burn faster, release denser smoke, and are often used on a small charcoal or in a fireproof dish. They are very suitable for offerings, targeted fumigations, or charging an altar.

They are also used to make your own blends: you can combine them with myrrh, benzoin, sage, or other resins depending on your intention.

The chips offer faster work, but also more concentrated. You can dose them as you wish.

3. Palo santo essential oil

The oil is extracted from mature wood, often by steam distillation. It is very precious because the wood must have naturally aged for several years before offering this olfactory richness.

You can use the oil in diffusion, diluted in another vegetable oil for massage, as drops on a sacred object, or in a ritual bath. It does not purify the air like smoke, but it acts on the emotional state, it grounds, soothes, clarifies.

The oil is well suited for inner, meditative work, or to create a bubble of calm and centering.

Choosing between stick, chips, or oil is not a question of form. It is a question of the language of the wood. And in each form, the breath of palo santo remains present.
