Frankincense (or Olibanum)

Frankincense (or Olibanum)

General description of Frankincense or Olibanum

Frankincense, also known as Olibanum, is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the Boswellia genus, mainly Boswellia sacra, Boswellia carterii, Boswellia frereana, and Boswellia serrata. These trees are native to the Arabian Peninsula, the Horn of Africa, and certain regions of India. The resin is harvested by cutting the bark of the tree, allowing a milky sap to flow out, which then hardens into a resinous gum. Frankincense is known for its woody, spicy, and slightly lemony scent when burned.

History of Frankincense or Olibanum

Frankincense has been used for millennia in various cultures and religions around the world. It is mentioned in ancient texts, including the Bible, where it is one of the three gifts brought by the Magi to the infant Jesus. In ancient Egypt, frankincense was used in religious rituals and to embalm the dead. Arab traders controlled the frankincense trade, which was as valuable as gold. It also played an important role in the medicinal and spiritual traditions of Indian and Chinese civilizations.
