Tolu Balm

Tolu Balm

General Description of Tolu Balm

Tolu balm is an aromatic resin obtained from the tree Myroxylon balsamum var. toluiferum, native to South America, mainly Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru. The Tolu balm resin is harvested by incising the bark of the tree, allowing a thick, sticky sap to flow, which then hardens into dark brown to amber gum pieces.

It was known to Spanish explorers in the 16th century who introduced it to Europe. In traditional medicine, it was used to treat respiratory ailments, wounds, and skin infections.
