Mugwort
Mugwort (Armoise), a plant with many virtues, has long been considered a barrier against dark forces and malevolent spirits. During the summer solstice (the Litha sabbat), this herb was traditionally thrown into bonfires to symbolize the release of all accumulated ills over the year and the invocation of divine protection for the months ahead. Associated with Artemis, it owes its Latin name Artemisia Vulgaris.
However, with the advent of Christianity, Mugwort underwent a symbolic transformation. What was once revered became suspect in the eyes of the new religious dogmas. Thus, Mugwort was demonized and labeled as the "witches' herb."
Today, mugwort is also recognized for its properties promoting clairvoyance and intuition. Used in smudging, it helps open extrasensory perceptions, allowing a deeper connection with subtle worlds and a better understanding of spiritual messages.
Other names: St. John's Herb, St. John's Belt, Herb of a Hundred Tastes.

A Herb of Fire and Liberation
Mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris, plays a central role in traditions related to the summer solstice. During the Litha sabbat, it is thrown into ritual fires to burn away accumulated harmful influences and open a new cycle of clarity and solar strength. This act symbolizes purification by fire, strengthening spiritual protections and consolidating connections with the natural energies of growth and renewal. Present in these rites since antiquity, it acts as a bridge between the forces of the earth and those of the sky, catalyzing grounding and elevation.
Lunar Protection and Feminine Power
Dedicated to Artemis, Mugwort carries a powerful symbolic charge. The Greek goddess, associated with the moon and wild nature, grants it properties linked to protection, intuition, and feminine cycles. Used to support women's health and enhance spiritual perceptions, Mugwort embodies a gentle yet unwavering healing energy. It belongs to a tradition of sacred plants connected to regeneration, nocturnal protection, and mastery of altered states of consciousness, such as lucid dreaming or oracular practices.
From Demonization to Rehabilitation
Long associated with witchcraft due to its role in ancient rituals, Mugwort faced attacks from religious authorities who sought to eradicate its use. Despite this repression, it has endured through the centuries, retaining its power and reputation among practitioners. Today, it is rehabilitated for its spiritual qualities, especially in fumigation. Its smoke purifies spaces, enhances mental clarity, and opens perception to subtle messages. It accompanies spiritual quests, supporting inner listening and resonance with invisible forces.
