Visconti Tarot is a true masterpiece in the history of tarot and one of the oldest decks still known today. It stands out for its remarkable state of preservation, making it an invaluable treasure for historians and tarot enthusiasts alike. Each card is a small artistic masterpiece, reflecting the refinement of the Italian Renaissance. The original copies are carefully kept in prestigious institutions such as the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy, as well as in the private collection of the Colleoni family.
These cards, created in the mid-15th century in the city of Milan, were reportedly commissioned for a very special occasion: the wedding of Francesco Sforza, newly appointed lord of Milan, to Bianca Maria Visconti, daughter of the previous duke. More than just a deck, the Visconti Tarot is deeply rooted in the history of that era, embodying the union of two great families and celebrating the power, art, and culture of a flourishing period of the Italian Renaissance.
This tarot is not limited to its divinatory role. It is also an exceptional testimony to the artistic techniques of its time. The restoration of the cards, presented in this set, was carried out by the talented Bulgarian painter Atanas A. Atanassov.
