Jerusalem is a city with a rich historical and spiritual past, considered sacred by the three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Each of these traditions has left a deep mark there through the ages, making Jerusalem a center of pilgrimage and veneration worldwide.
For Judaism, Jerusalem is the holiest city and the site of Solomon's Temple, also known as the First Temple, built in the 10th century BCE. This temple was considered the spiritual center of Judaism, where the most sacred rites were performed, including sacrifices. After its destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BCE, a Second Temple was built, which was also destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The only remnant of the latter is the Western Wall, which remains a major place of prayer and pilgrimage for Jews around the world.
Jerusalem is also at the heart of the Christian faith, being the place of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These events are celebrated in the city, especially in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where many Christians believe Jesus was buried and resurrected. This site is a focal point of pilgrimage for Christians worldwide, who come to meditate and pray along the Way of the Cross, the path Jesus is said to have taken to his crucifixion.
For Islam, Jerusalem is the third holiest city after Mecca and Medina. According to Muslim tradition, it is from Jerusalem that the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven during the Miraj. The Dome of the Rock, where the stone from which Muhammad is said to have ascended is located, is an iconic monument of the city. Next to it is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, another site of great religious importance for Muslims.
