Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha, is the founder of Buddhism, one of the world's major spiritual religions and philosophies. Born into a royal family in the 5th or 6th century BCE in present-day Nepal, Siddhartha initially led a luxurious life, shielded from the world's suffering by his father. However, confronted with the reality of human suffering – illness, aging, and death – he was deeply disturbed and decided to leave his palace in search of spiritual truth.
After years of rigorous ascetic practice and deep meditation, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India. He understood the causes of human suffering and how to be free from it, which is now expressed in the teachings of the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. The Buddha spent the rest of his life teaching the Dharma, the path of virtue and wisdom, traveling throughout northern India and gathering a community of monks, nuns, and lay followers until his death.
The Buddha is not considered a god in Buddhism, but rather a guide to spiritual awakening. His teaching is based on the principles of compassion, non-violence, and mutual understanding, aiming to help each individual realize their own Buddha nature, that is, their potential for clarity, peace, and inner harmony.
