Liber Null & Psychonaut - Introduction to Chaos Magick
This volume brings together two major texts by Peter J. Carroll: Liber Null and Psychonaut, considered the foundations of modern chaos magic. In Liber Null, the author offers a series of powerful rituals and exercises designed for determined practitioners. He develops two central principles: on one hand, altered states of consciousness are essential to activate magical abilities; on the other hand, these abilities can be exercised without relying on a fixed symbolic system, as reality itself is sufficient as a support.
Psychonaut complements this approach by addressing those who wish to explore magic in groups or take on a role as a spiritual guide within a community. This text serves as a practical manual, a tool for contemporary shamanic priests and practitioners working within collective ritual frameworks.

A Break with Fixed Traditions
This volume brings together two emblematic texts by Peter J. Carroll, a central figure in chaos magic: Liber Null and Psychonaut. From the very first pages, the author breaks with traditional esotericism by proposing a path stripped of dogmas, where structure no longer takes precedence over effectiveness. In Liber Null, he introduces a series of rigorous exercises, accessible only to those who commit to a disciplined experimental approach. Far from fixed symbols and codified occult currents, Carroll asserts that magic draws its power from mastering altered states of consciousness and the freedom to use ritual forms. This text invites detachment from imposed systems to forge a personal practice adapted to one’s own reality.
Towards Autonomous and Pragmatic Magic
With Psychonaut, Peter J. Carroll expands his approach by offering concrete tools to structure a collective practice of chaos magic. The book is aimed at practitioners wishing to evolve in groups or lead a circle, without falling into hierarchy or dogma. It describes the conditions for an effective ritual, the role of intentionally created entities, as well as the energetic mechanisms of an egregore. Carroll does not seek to convince through theory: he proposes a testable, adaptable method based on experimentation and observation. Each ritual becomes a laboratory, each practitioner an autonomous operator capable of adapting tools to their own worldview.
A Foundational Base for Chaos Magic
Combined in a single volume, Liber Null and Psychonaut form the practical and philosophical foundations of Chaos Magick. Peter J. Carroll outlines a paradigm based on flexibility, individual responsibility, and altered consciousness as the key to magical effectiveness. This dual work stands as an essential reference for those wishing to break free from established frameworks, build a living and effective practice, and redefine their relationship to the sacred through flexible and functional tools. Magic is no longer inherited here; it is built, lived, and transformed through direct experience.
Peter James Carroll is a British occultist born in 1953 in southern England. He began his esoteric career at the University of London, where he earned a degree in chemistry with a pass, while simultaneously developing his own experiments in magic, which would serve as the basis for his first works.
In the late 1970s, together with Ray Sherwin, he co-directed the magazine The New Equinox, rooted in the magical revival, then in 1978 founded the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT) lodge, often considered the first institutionalized chaos magic order. At the same time, he published Liber Null in 1978, followed by Psychonaut in 1982, two fundamental works of chaos magic, combined into a single volume in 1987.
His approach aims to explore magic through altered states of consciousness (the "gnosis") and without rigid symbolic structure, a stance that revolutionized occult practices. He also introduced concepts such as Kia, the force of individual consciousness, and Chaos, the fundamental force of reality connected to this consciousness.
Carroll led the IOT as Grand Master before gradually stepping back in 1995, defining himself simply as a practitioner rather than a leader of chaos magic. In 2005, he taught at the Maybe Logic Academy, an invitation from Robert Anton Wilson.
He then founded the Arcanorium College, where he serves as chancellor, and maintains connections with occult groups such as the Knights of Chaos and the Dobunni Grove.

We believe in all forms of magic.
High magic and its rigorous rituals deserve as much respect as spells passed down in the countryside. We read grimoires, respect rites, listen to old stories. Everything practiced with faith deserves serious and curious attention.
We welcome all traditions.
We don’t put one path above another. We talk hoodoo, kabbalah, Christian prayers, elemental magic, folk rituals, Celtic symbols. What matters is respect. Not the label.
