Infernal - Illustrated History of the Devil

34,95 €
Low stock

This beautiful work offers an exploration of the Devil through its multiple representations in art, both in the West and the East, based on a scholarly and richly illustrated analysis. It highlights the symbols and manifestations of the devil in the collective imagination, while providing a historical and artistic perspective on Evil in its past and contemporary forms. For the first time, an exceptional collection of works is brought together: paintings, engravings, ancient documents, books, posters, postcards, tarot cards, album covers, comics, objects, and other curiosities related to demonic figures, the occult, and representations of Evil.

Satan is thus revealed through the brush of great masters such as Hans Memling, Luca Signorelli, Giotto, Albrecht Dürer, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Hieronymus Bosch, Gustave Doré, William Blake, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, as well as contemporary artists like Ronald Ventura, Andres Serrano, Yue Minjun, Cindy Sherman, Pierre and Gilles, Matt Groening, and many others. This vast gallery testifies to the place of Evil in artistic creation, between fascination and fear, from the Renaissance to the most current expressions.

This work offers a fascinating exploration of the Devil through its representations in art, from the East to the West, and across the centuries. Drawing on a scholarly text and abundant iconography, it analyzes the symbols and manifestations of the devil in the collective imagination, highlighting how humanity has perceived, feared, and sublimated this figure that is both terrifying and captivating.

For the first time, an exceptional collection of works is gathered in a single volume: paintings, engravings, ancient documents, books, posters, postcards, tarot cards, album covers, comics, ritual objects, and curiosities of all kinds, all related to representations of the demon, the occult, and evil throughout history.

Among the artists who have shaped the Devil in their works, find Hans Memling, Luca Signorelli, the Maestro de Arguis, Francis Goya, Jackson Pollock, Giotto, Katsushika Hokusai, Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Albrecht Dürer, Jan Van der Straet, Bruegel the Elder, Giambattista Tiepolo, James Ensor, Pablo Picasso, Matthias Grünewald, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Beato Angelico, Giovanni da Modena, Henry John Stock, Enrico Baj, Anton Koch, Caravaggio, Qinguang Wang, Gustave Doré, William Blake, William Hogarth, Franz von Stuck, Juan de Flandes, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Luca da Leida, Vincenzo Foppa, Eduard Schoen, Fabio Cipolla, Michael Pacher, Jérôme Bosch, Paul Cézanne, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Giacomo Canavesio, Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, Alexander McQueen, Pieter Paul Rubens, and Niki de Saint Phalle.

The work also focuses on contemporary approaches to Evil through the works of Ronald Ventura, Andres Serrano, Yue Minjun, Gareth Pugh, Francesco Cl, Robert Williams, Sophie von Hellermann, Tony Oursler, Natee Utarit, Rafael Megall, Richard Phillips, Wang Guangyi, Xun Sun, Nicola Verlato, Manuel Ocampo, Ruben Pang, Cindy Sherman, Pierre and Gilles, Gary Baseman, Matt Groening, and many others.

Between sacred and profane art, mythological representations and modern critiques, this study offers a visual and historical reading of the devil in all its forms, bearing witness to its lasting influence on artistic creation and on the perception of evil through the ages.

We welcome all traditions.

We don’t put one path above another. We talk hoodoo, kabbalah, Christian prayers, elemental magic, folk rituals, Celtic symbols. What matters is respect. Not the label.
