Our Lady of Knock

Our Lady of Knock

Our Lady of Knock is the name given to the Virgin Mary in connection with an apparition that occurred on August 21, 1879, in the village of Knock, Ireland.

The 1879 Apparition

According to testimonies, around 7 p.m., about fifteen villagers observed, on the south wall of the parish church, a silent vision including the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist, accompanied by an altar topped with a lamb and a cross, symbolizing Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God.

Recognition and Sanctuary

After thorough investigations, the Catholic Church recognized the authenticity of the apparition in 1936. A Marian sanctuary was established at Knock, which has since become a major pilgrimage site in Ireland, attracting millions of visitors each year.

Meaning and Celebrations

Our Lady of Knock is venerated as the "Queen of Ireland." Her feast is celebrated on August 21, commemorating the anniversary of the apparition. The Knock sanctuary is an important spiritual center, offering pilgrims opportunities for prayer, reconciliation, and spiritual renewal.
