Saint Vincent de Paul

Saint Vincent de Paul

General presentation of Saint Vincent de Paul

Saint Vincent de Paul, born in 1581 in Pouy (now renamed Saint-Vincent-de-Paul in his honor), is one of the major figures of charity in the Catholic Church. Coming from a peasant family, he studied theology before being ordained a priest in 1600. His life changed when he discovered the misery of peasants and the destitute during his stays in various regions of France. Deeply moved by this suffering, he decided to dedicate his life to charity and serving the poor. He founded the "Congregation of the Mission" (or Lazarists) in 1625 and, with Louise de Marillac, the "Daughters of Charity" in 1633, which remain one of the most important communities of nuns dedicated to caring for the poor today. Vincent de Paul was canonized in 1737 and his feast day is September 27.

Myths of Saint Vincent de Paul

One of the defining episodes of his life was his temporary enslavement in Tunisia after being captured by Barbary pirates in 1605. Released two years later, he returned to France and fully devoted himself to charitable works. Another legend associated with his mission is his role in the creation of the "Confraternities of Charity," an organization that brought together women to care for the sick and the poor, thus laying the foundations for modern charity initiatives within the Church.
