Saint Sebastian

Saint Sebastian

General presentation of Saint Sebastian

Saint Sebastian was a Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century, under Emperor Diocletian. Born in Narbonne, Gaul, he joined the Roman army and became a centurion of the Praetorian Guard, while secretly helping persecuted Christians. Discovered for his faith, he was sentenced to death and pierced with arrows. He survived this ordeal thanks to the care of Saint Irene, but was ultimately beaten to death after reproaching the emperor for his persecutions against Christians. He is celebrated on January 20 in the Catholic Church.

Symbols and appearances of Saint Sebastian

Saint Sebastian is often depicted tied to a post, his body pierced with arrows, which has become one of the most well-known symbols of his martyrdom. Despite the violence of this scene, artistic representations often show a serene expression on his face, symbolizing his unwavering faith and spiritual victory. He is also portrayed as a protector against the plague and epidemics, due to the association of his arrow wounds with the spread of diseases.

Myths of Saint Sebastian

A popular legend tells that Saint Sebastian was invoked to protect people against the plague, especially during the Black Death epidemic. The arrows that pierced him became a symbol of protection against evil, and he quickly became the patron saint of archers and soldiers, as well as of those struck by epidemics. His resilience in the face of suffering makes him a model of courage and faith for Christians.
