Ostara Sabbat

Ostara Sabbat

General description of the Ostara sabbat

  • Sabbat date: March 21 (spring equinox)
  • Status: minor sabbat

Ostara is one of the eight sabbats celebrated by Wicca practitioners and other modern pagan traditions. This sabbat marks the spring equinox, a moment of perfect balance between day and night, symbolizing rebirth, fertility, and renewal. Ostara is a time to celebrate the return of life after winter and the promise of longer, warmer days ahead.

History of the Ostara Sabbat

Ostara takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre (or Ostara), goddess of dawn and spring. Ancient peoples celebrated this time with fertility festivals and rites to honor nature's renewal. Eggs and hares, symbols of fertility, were often associated with these celebrations. Some modern Easter traditions have roots in these ancient pagan festivities.
