General description of the Samhain sabbat
- Sabbat date: October 31
- Status: major sabbat
Samhain is one of the eight sabbats celebrated by Wicca practitioners and other modern pagan traditions. This sabbat marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Samhain is often considered the witches' New Year, a time when the veil between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest, allowing communication with ancestors and spirits.
History of the Samhain Sabbat
Samhain has its roots in ancient Celtic traditions. The word "Samhain" means "end of summer" in Gaelic. The Celts believed that on the night of Samhain, the spirits of the dead returned to earth to visit the living. Bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits, and offerings of food and drink were left to appease wandering souls. Many modern Halloween traditions originate from these ancient practices.
