Jizo Bosatsu, more commonly called Jizo, is a major figure in Japanese Buddhism, revered for his great compassion and commitment to protecting sentient beings. He is especially known for his role as protector of children, particularly the souls of children who died before their parents, as well as travelers and pregnant women. Jizo is also a figure of relief for those suffering in the six realms of rebirth, according to Buddhist cosmology, with special attention to lost souls or those trapped in hell.

Jizo is often depicted as a stone statue, wearing a simple monastic robe and a pilgrim’s hat. He may hold a staff with rings that jingle to warn insects and other small creatures of his approach, so as not to harm them, and a precious jewel, believed to illuminate darkness and help those in need. Myths
Jizo is often the subject of folk tales and legends that highlight his mercy and willingness to help those in distress. One of the most touching stories tells how Jizo descends into hell to comfort and save the souls of children trapped there. It is said that he hides these souls in the folds of his robe to carry them safely to paradise. These stories emphasize his role as a savior and his dedication to relieving suffering, no matter which realm it is found in.
Spiritual Message
Jizo’s spiritual message is deeply rooted in the principles of compassion, patience, and altruism. He embodies the ideal of the Bodhisattva, one who attains bodhi (enlightenment) but delays entering nirvana to help all beings be freed from suffering.
