If you feel a certain discomfort at home, it may be a sign that you need to carry out a purification, either of your space or yourself... or both. The places where you spend time naturally tend to "store" energies, whether positive or negative. In the latter case, they may come from moments of stress, anxiety, fear, anger, which appear after an argument, a burglary, a bereavement, or another event that, let's be honest, we could do without. But good news, there is a completely natural and time-tested way to eliminate this heavy atmosphere, called: sage. Here is a small guide to simply and easily carry out a truly effective purification.

1. Sage, a sacred plant

When I immerse myself in the world of sage, I connect to an ancestral tradition, a spiritual and cultural heritage that transcends borders and eras. I see my sage bundle as a symbol and not just a simple purification tool.

1.1. Origins and history of the use of sage

My fascination with sage began first with my best friend, who made me forget the simple chemical indoor fragrances found in stores (which are also as expensive as they are ineffective). So I delved a little deeper into the history of sage, which begins in America with indigenous tribes. For them, sage is sacred, endowed with a spirit. The smudging rituals, where sage is burned to release its purifying smoke, act like a net that traps negative energies. These practices, although varied from one culture to another, share a common root: the recognition of sage as a powerful tool for purification and healing.

Venturing beyond the Americas, I discovered that the use of sage extends to many cultures around the world, each with its own traditions. In antiquity, the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians valued sage for its medicinal and spiritual properties.

1.2. The different varieties of sage in purification

My quest led me to explore different varieties of sage. The best known, white sage (Salvia Apiana), is often the one I use in my own rituals and is the most common. Native to the desert regions of the southwestern United States (often referred to as California white sage) and northwestern Mexico, this plant is renowned for its powerful scent and intense cleansing properties. It is often chosen for its thick, fleshy leaves that burn slowly and produce abundant, fragrant smoke.

I also became interested in blue sage (Salvia Clevelandii), known for its milder scent and less dense smoke. Although less common in purification rituals, it offers an alternative for those who prefer a gentler aroma. Blue sage is often used in contexts where lightness and subtlety are sought, such as during meditations or gentle healings.

Digging deeper, I discovered prairie sage (Artemisia Ludoviciana), sometimes called white prairie sage, although it is not a true sage (Salvia). It is used similarly for purification and has a distinctly different scent, more earthy. This variety is especially valued in certain indigenous traditions.

2. How to properly purify your home?

Purifying the home with sage is an ancient ritual that I have incorporated into my life to harmonize and energize my living space. This process transforms the atmosphere of our home by eliminating stagnant or negative energies. Here is how I proceed, step by step, to purify my home with sage, along with tips for effective and safe purification.

2.1. Preparation for space purification

Before starting, I make sure my house is physically clean. For me, energetic purification is more effective when the space is already tidied and physically cleaned. I then prepare my altar or sacred space by placing the sage in an abalone shell or a heat-resistant container, lighting the sage until it starts to smoke. I set my intention for the purification, whether it is for peace, healing, protection, or another specific purpose. Purification indeed involves visualization, setting a goal that will make your ritual even more effective.

2.2. Steps to Purify Your Interior

You are now ready to purify by simply following the steps below:

  1. I start by opening the windows, even slightly, to allow negative energies and smoke to escape.

  2. Purification begins at the front door of the house, as this is where energies enter. I hold my smoking sage firmly and move clockwise through each room.

  3. Entering each room, I guide the smoke toward the four corners, paying special attention to passage areas like doors and windows, as well as corners where energy can stagnate and accumulate. If a room seems to need more attention, I linger there, always focusing on my intention, even if it means making several rounds.

  4. Bedrooms and resting spaces receive special attention, as they are places of regeneration. I make sure the smoke gently envelops the areas where we spend a lot of time, such as around the bed.

  5. Once all the rooms are purified, I return to my starting point, thanking the sage and the spirit of the plant for their help in this purification process. I let the sage burn out or carefully extinguish it.

  6. Leave the rooms ventilated as dense smoke may have settled. No worries: it is doing its work, absorbing and will dissipate once its task is complete.

  7. To perfectly complete your ritual, you can place salt in the corners of each room to absorb residual energies and astral larvae.

2.3. Additional Tips

Here are some tips to further enhance your energy purification with sage:

  • Always place the sage in a heat-resistant container and never leave the sage unattended.

  • During the ritual, maintain calm and steady breathing, opening yourself to the purification experience.

  • Remember that sage is a sacred plant. Use it with respect, avoiding waste and thanking the plant for its help.

3. How to purify yourself with sage?

Self-purification with sage is a ritual that allows me to reconnect with my essence, cleanse my energy field, and strengthen my physical and spiritual well-being. It is a practice I have integrated into my wellness routine to maintain inner balance and harmony. Here is how I proceed for personal purification with sage, the breathing and meditative techniques I associate with this ritual, as well as tips to effectively incorporate it into my routine.

3.1. Personal Purification Steps

As with space purification, I recommend a small preparatory work:

  • I choose a calm and serene space where I will not be disturbed. Before starting, I take a moment to clearly set my intention for this purification ritual. Whether it is to eliminate negative energies, for healing, or for mental clarity, this intention will guide the process.

  • I carefully light the sage and let it burn until it produces abundant smoke. I place the sage in a heat-resistant container that I can easily hold or move.

  • Holding the container, I guide the smoke around my body, starting from my feet and moving up to my head, moving clockwise. I visualize the smoke carrying away all negative energies, worries, and tensions.

3.2. Breathing and Meditative Techniques

During the ritual, I practice deep and conscious breathing. I slowly inhale through my nose, filling my lungs with fresh air, and exhale through my mouth, releasing all tension or negativity. This breathing helps amplify the purifying effect of the sage and strengthens my inner connection.

After purifying my body with sage, I sit down and close my eyes to meditate. I focus on my intention, visualizing the sage smoke as a purifying light that envelops and penetrates my being, cleansing every cell, every thought, every emotion.

4. In what forms is sage available?

Sage has become and remains very popular for purification. It is available in several forms depending on your uses and constraints.

4.1. Sage Bundles (or Smudges)

Sage bundles, also known as "smudges," are among the most traditional and recognized forms of using sage in purification rituals. These bundles are made from dried sage leaves, often white sage, carefully tied together with natural twine to form a compact stick. When lit, they produce a dense, fragrant smoke used to cleanse spaces, objects, and people of negative energies. This practice, rooted in indigenous traditions, has become popular far beyond, in many cultures worldwide for its purifying properties.

4.2. Sage incense

Sage incense offers a practical and accessible way to incorporate the purifying benefits of sage into daily life. Available as sticks, cones, or pellets, sage incense is made from finely ground dried sage mixed with a natural binder to hold its shape. When burned, the incense releases a light, fragrant smoke, ideal for gentle and continuous purification of the surrounding space. They are especially appreciated for their ease of use and their ability to create a serene and sacred atmosphere, whether during meditative practices, yoga sessions, or simply to delicately scent the air.

4.3. Dried sage

Dried sage is simply fresh sage that has been dehydrated to preserve its properties. It can be used in various ways, including making homemade sage bundles or added as is to burning bowls for purification. It offers great flexibility of use, from purification rituals to culinary applications, as well as preparing natural remedies.

4.4. Sage essential oil

Sage essential oil is extracted from the plant's leaves through steam distillation. Concentrated and powerful, it captures the essence of sage in a liquid form, usable in many ways. In aromatherapy, a few drops of sage essential oil can be diffused to purify the air and positively influence mood and mind. It can also be diluted in a carrier oil for topical application, offering therapeutic benefits for the skin and body. Sage essential oil is valued for its ability to concentrate the purifying and soothing properties of sage in a practical and versatile format.

This is how my guide on how to use sage for purification ends. I hope you find it useful!
