Have you ever felt the invisible force of a crowd united by the same emotion, like at a concert, ceremony, or demonstration? This powerful collective current, charged with thoughts, intentions, and energies, could well be the work of an egregore. But what exactly is an egregore? Explanation.

1. Definition of the egregore

If you are interested in ancient occult texts, you will inevitably come across this somewhat obscure term. The concept of egregore actually refers to a collective psychic entity formed by the converging thoughts, emotions, and wills of a group of people united by a common goal. This term, derived from the ancient Greek ἐγρήγορος meaning "watcher" or "awake," appeared in the Book of Enoch, where it refers to fallen angels called Watchers.

In esoteric tradition, an egregore is seen as an autonomous force, an energetic entity born and developed through the collective energy of its members. This entity, although non-physical, can exert a tangible influence on individuals and events, reflecting the power of collective consciousness. Thus, understanding egregores helps grasp how group dynamics can generate psychic forces capable of influencing individual behavior and the course of events.

2. Its appearance in the Book of Enoch

The Book of Enoch, also known as 1 Enoch or Ethiopian Enoch, is an apocryphal text attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Although it is not part of the traditional biblical canon, it played a fundamental role in apocalyptic and esoteric literature, influencing beliefs about the origins of evil and visions of the end times. This book notably explores the fall of angels, the role of divine justice, and celestial cycles.

Composed between the 3rd century BC and the 1st century AD, the Book of Enoch has endured through the ages mainly thanks to its preservation in the Ethiopian tradition, where it is considered canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It was rediscovered by Western scholars in the 18th century from Ethiopian manuscripts. The text focuses particularly on the "Watchers," angels tasked with watching over humanity, who, seduced by the daughters of men, transgressed their divine duties. Their union with humans gave birth to hybrid beings, the Nephilim, known for their gigantism and corruption. This transgression is described as one of the major causes of evil on Earth.

In this story, the term "egregore" is used to designate all these fallen angels. Their fall, caused by their actions, condemns them to exile and divine punishment. Thus, these watchful angels, initially bearers of knowledge and celestial secrets, become symbols of forbidden and corrupted knowledge.

In the 19th century, occultists such as Éliphas Lévi reinterpreted the term to link it to collective energetic dynamics. The egregore, in this modernized context, thus becomes a psychic or energetic entity formed by the thoughts, emotions, and intentions of a human group.

3. Egregore and thought-form

These two terms are sometimes confused, and wrongly so, because even though they share common roots, their purpose is very different.

A thought-form is an energetic entity created by the thoughts and emotions of a single individual. It is generally ephemeral and of low intensity, although some can become more powerful if intentionally intensified. It is therefore not an egregore, which is a more powerful entity, but we can consider that an egregore is a collection of thought-forms.

4. Birth and functioning of an egregore

4.1. The creation of an egregore

The birth of an egregore begins when several individuals focus their thoughts and emotions on the same goal or ideal. This concentration of mental and emotional energy creates several aggregated thought-forms which, by amplifying, acquire an independent existence on the energetic plane. The higher the intensity and duration of this concentration, the more the egregore gains power and autonomy.

4.2. Maintaining an egregore

Once created, an egregore requires a constant supply of energy to sustain itself. The group members feed it through their thoughts, emotions, and actions related to the common goal. The commitment and devotion of the participants are essential to maintain its vitality. If the attention or energy of the members weakens, the egregore can weaken or even dissolve.

4.3. Relationships with the egregore

The relationship between an egregore and its members is bidirectional. While individuals feed the egregore, it exerts influence on them. It can strengthen beliefs, inspire actions, or alter the emotional states of members. Note that, as we will see a little further down, an egregore can be positive or negative. Therefore, caution is necessary when creating one because all emotions will be amplified.

5. The manifestation of the egregore

I am aware that all this may seem vague or theoretical. You may be wondering: what does an egregore look like? It is important to understand that an egregore, as an aggregate of intangible energies, has neither visible form nor tangible substance. It exists on a subtle, energetic plane and can only be perceived indirectly. However, there is a foolproof tool to recognize one: yourself.

Think of those moments when, looking at a powerful image, reading an inspiring text, or being part of a group, you felt an intense emotion. This emotion can be energizing, like a surge of shared enthusiasm, or unsettling, causing a feeling of discomfort or anxiety. Sometimes, it is so strong that it gives you chills, goosebumps that seem to come from nowhere. In these moments, you are very likely in contact with an egregore.

This subtle connection can occur at any time: when listening to a crowd singing in unison, participating in a ritual, or even reading a literary work that seems to resonate deeply within you. It can also manifest during large gatherings, such as concerts or demonstrations, where the collective energy is almost tangible. It is in these moments that you perceive the power of an egregore.

Contact with an egregore is not inherently dangerous. However, it requires some vigilance. These interactions amplify emotions and can make them particularly intense, sometimes to the point of becoming uncontrollable. An egregore acts like an energetic mirror: it reflects and amplifies what you feel or project, whether it is joy, passion, or, on the contrary, fear or anger. It is therefore essential to remain aware of your own emotions and intentions, as they determine the nature of your connection with the egregore.

6. Types of egregores

6.1. Religious egregores

Religious and spiritual egregores emerge from the beliefs, practices, and rituals shared by members of a faith community. These collective psychic entities form through the convergence of thoughts, emotions, and intentions of the faithful, creating an energetic force that transcends individuals.

Prayers, ceremonies, chants, and collective meditations are all means that feed and strengthen these egregores. They play a central role in group cohesion by consolidating the sense of belonging and offering spiritual support to members. Moreover, these egregores can influence the behaviors and perceptions of the faithful, guiding their actions and shaping their worldview according to the values and teachings of the tradition concerned. Thus, religious and spiritual egregores are tangible manifestations of collective consciousness within faith communities.

6.2. Cultural egregores

Cultural and social egregores form from the values, traditions, and behaviors shared within a culture or society. They encompass social norms, ways of thinking, and collective ideals that shape a group's identity.

These egregores influence individual and collective behaviors, strengthening the sense of belonging and unity within the community. They play a central role in transmitting traditions and values, ensuring cultural and social continuity across generations. By shaping individuals' perceptions and attitudes, these egregores contribute to social cohesion and the stability of cultural structures.

6.3. Positive egregores

A positive egregore is based on constructive values and benevolent intentions. It is nourished by emotions such as love, compassion, gratitude, and joy. These egregores promote cohesion, mutual aid, and collective progress. They can inspire altruistic behaviors and motivate group members to achieve high goals, whether spiritual, social, or professional. For example, a positive egregore can strengthen solidarity in a community, provide support during difficult times, or promote a noble cause.

These egregores have a stimulating and harmonious energy, capable of transforming individual and collective dynamics for the better. Their influence can extend beyond the initial group, spreading beneficial energy in their environment.

6.4. Negative egregores

A negative egregore, on the other hand, is fueled by destructive emotions such as fear, hatred, envy, or anger. These entities can arise from conflicts, injustices, or ill-intentioned goals, and they tend to amplify the negative energies of the individuals who feed them. Their influence is often restrictive, limiting, or harmful, encouraging toxic behaviors like division, mistrust, or aggression.

These egregores can become oppressive for their members, trapping them in repetitive thought patterns or behaviors that are hard to break. In some cases, they can also attack those who try to detach themselves, causing feelings of guilt or anxiety.

7. The Most Famous Egregores

As you can see, there can be many egregores. However, some historical and cultural events are representative examples of this concept.

7.1. The Christian Crusades

The Crusades of the Middle Ages perfectly illustrate the power of a religious egregore. Fueled by Christian faith, the desire to protect holy sites, and the promise of spiritual redemption, this egregore mobilized thousands across Europe to undertake military expeditions. The collective energy generated by prayers, sermons, and religious ideals amplified the momentum of these campaigns, sometimes beyond all rationality.

7.2. The French Revolution

The French Revolution gave birth to a powerful political egregore, fueled by the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Gatherings, fiery speeches, and symbols like the Phrygian cap and the Marseillaise crystallized the collective energy of a population united to overthrow the Ancien Régime. This egregore continues to resonate today in democratic movements around the world.

7.3. Lady Diana

After her death, Lady Diana saw her egregore strengthen, becoming a universal symbol of compassion, the fight against injustice, and human vulnerability.

7.4. The MeToo Movement

Movements like #MeToo show how an egregore can quickly arise thanks to modern technology. This hashtag united millions of people around a common goal: to denounce sexual violence and promote equality. The collective energy of this movement had massive repercussions, changing corporate policies, legislation, and social norms worldwide.

I hope the concept of egregore is now clearer to you and will help you put a name to those energies you feel!
