When I talk about witch plants, I refer to a set of plants, herbs, seeds, and mushrooms that have historically been associated with the magical and medicinal practices of witches. These plants have been used for centuries for their healing properties, transformative powers, and their ability to connect the natural world to the supernatural. There are legendary plants such as mandrake or St. John's wort, but witches knew how to see the extraordinary in the simplest (apparent) plants. Overview.

1. Plants, used since the dawn of time

Plants already held an important place in societies such as Greece, Rome, and Egypt. They already understood the powerful properties of plants to heal, enchant, and protect. For example, in Egypt, plants like aloe and myrrh were used not only for their medicinal virtues but also in religious and funerary rituals. In Greece and Rome, herbs such as thyme and laurel were essential in sacred ceremonies and healing practices.

During the Middle Ages, plants continued to play a crucial role, not only in medicine but also in witchcraft. Herbalists and healers, often women, used plants to create herbal remedies. This knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, allowed for the treatment of various diseases and ailments. However, these practices were often frowned upon by the Church and authorities, who associated them with witchcraft. Thus, the line between healer and witch became blurred.

During periods of persecution, such as the witch hunts in Europe, certain plants were particularly associated with witchcraft and black magic. Belladonna, mandrake, and aconite, to name just a few, were often mentioned in witch trials. These plants, because of their toxic and hallucinogenic effects, were both feared and fascinating. It was believed they allowed witches to fly, transform, or cast spells.

Terrifying tales of women using plants to harm others or to summon demons have proliferated, often exaggerated by popular imagination and religious propaganda. These stories not only reinforced the fear of witches but also of the plants themselves, turning them into symbols of occult power and danger.

2. Witches' aromatic herbs

Witches have always had a close connection with nature, using various aromatic and medicinal herbs for their rituals and remedies. Aromatic herbs were especially prized for their properties and their ability to influence events and people.

They were often burned as incense to purify the air, made into infusions for potions, or incorporated into sachets and amulets to protect or enchant. Witches used these plants for healing, protection, exorcism, but also for more specific spells like invisibility, flight, or curses. Each plant had its specific magical properties, making their knowledge essential for any witchcraft practice.

Lavender Protection, purification
Rosemary Memory, healing
Sage Purification, exorcism
Thyme Courage, strength
Mint Mental clarity, prosperity

Verbena Enchantments, prophetic dreams

3. Witches' seeds and berries

Seeds and berries also held a special place in the witches' arsenal, charged with meanings and mystical powers. Poppy seeds, for example, were used for their hypnotic and dreamlike properties. Consuming or burning them could induce prophetic dreams or altered states of consciousness. Elderberries, on the other hand, were known to offer protection against evil spirits. Witches used them to create talismans or protective potions.

Ritual practices around these seeds and berries were varied and often complex. Witches incorporated them into rites to amplify their magical powers or for protection. For example, a traditional recipe involved infusing elderberries in spring water, creating a protective potion to sprinkle around the house. Similarly, poppy seeds could be added to dream sachets placed under the pillow to encourage lucid dreams and spiritual revelations.

Mushrooms have long fascinated witches for their unique properties and powerful effects on the body and mind. Hallucinogenic mushrooms, in particular, were prized for their ability to induce altered states of consciousness, facilitating trances, visions, and spiritual journeys. These experiences were often sought for divination, communication with spirits, and exploration of mystical dimensions. Toxic mushrooms, on the other hand, were surrounded by legends and warnings, their danger both feared and respected.
