As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (in the south of Finistère to be precise). And it is well known that this area lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.
This week we are heading to La Roche-aux-Fées, located in Ille-et-Vilaine, which has fascinated for centuries. This majestic dolmen, built around the end of the Neolithic period, impresses with its size: nearly 20 meters long and over 4 meters high. It is not only the largest dolmen in France but also one of the best preserved in Europe, attracting prehistory enthusiasts and those curious about ancient mysteries.
According to legend, this monument was built in a single night by fairies. They are said to have carried these gigantic stones from a distant land, placing them here to make their secret home. Some say that if you walk near La Roche-aux-Fées on a particularly quiet night, you might still feel their presence.
Another tradition concerns young couples who visit there. The custom is that newlyweds, at the new moon, walk around the dolmen each on their own side. The man on one side, the woman on the other, they must silently count the exact number of stones that make up the structure. When the spouses meet again, they announce their results. If their counts match, it is seen as a sign of eternal love. However, if the numbers differ, some see it as a sign of instability in the relationship...
