The Cave of Artus

The Cave of Artus

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small business based in Brittany (in the south of Finistère to be precise). And it is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

This week, we stay in the Huelgoat forest (yes, I really like it), after our visit to the Devil's Cave and the Fairies' Pond. This time we stop at another legendary cave...

Artus' cave

Artus' sleep

Artus, a variant of the legendary King Arthur, was the leader of the Britons of Great Britain in the 6th century. Known for his bravery and wisdom, he is said to have led his men to victory in more than ten battles against the Saxon invaders. However, his story resonates not only on the battlefield but also in the depths of the Huelgoat forest where Artus' cave is located.

According to legend, Artus rests in a cave, surrounded by some of his loyal knight companions and protected by ancient enchantments.

Artus and his knights must only be awakened when the homeland is in grave danger. At that moment, he will rise from his centuries-old sleep to resume the fight and restore the Kingdom of Brittany, destroyed by the Saxons.

But woe to anyone who dares to awaken Artus without a valid reason, for they would not leave this sanctuary alive.

The treasure of Artus' cave

The Cave of Artus is also said to hold a fabulous treasure, amassed over the centuries. This treasure is guarded by demons who appear as will-o'-the-wisps floating in the night air. The villagers say these will-o'-the-wisps protect the cave's entrance, misleading the curious and adventurers who seek to discover the hidden riches.

It is said that those who seek the cave must be cautious. Only the pure of heart and the brave can hope to approach the cave without facing the wrath of demons.

So now you know what to expect. That's all for this week, see you next Friday for a new legend!
