The Lanleff Fountain

The Lanleff Fountain

As you may know, behind Aeternum is a small company based in Brittany (in the south of Finistère to be precise). And it is well known that this region lives to the rhythm of legends, myths, and magical practices more or less known (Brocéliande, Merlin, the Fairy Viviane, the Alignments, and many others). Thus, to highlight our beautiful region, we will regularly publish little-known legends from Breton history.

As last week, we remain in the north of Finistère to discover the mystery of the circular pink granite temple of Lanleff, whose origin is the subject of several theories. But we will mainly focus on its fountain, which is said to have been the object of a trade with Lucifer.

According to this story, a poor and repulsive woman made a pact with the devil: her child in exchange for gold coins. Lucifer, always ready to make a deal (and especially to collect souls), accepted the offer. He placed a handful of burning gold coins on the edge of the fountain. Immediately, he seized the child and disappeared.

The Lanleff Fountain

The unworthy mother, eager to retrieve her loot, reached for the coins but was badly burned. The coins had just come out of the flames of the Underworld. Yes, the devil is not called the Cunning One for nothing...

With a cry of pain, she dropped the precious coins, which then became embedded forever in the granite of the edge.

The Lanleff Fountain

Since then, it is said that just pouring a little water on this edge will reveal 14 coins embedded in the stone, silent witnesses of this grim pact. But beware of temptation...

See you next week for another legend!
