The concept of the evil eye, symbolizing that a look filled with jealousy or envy from a person can cause suffering, illness, and in some extreme cases, lead to death, is widespread worldwide and can sometimes have different names. But here we will stick to the term evil eye.

1. What is the evil eye?

This notion explains that some individuals, often without deliberate intent to harm, are capable of emitting negative energy simply through their envy or excessive admiration. The youngest, especially babies, as well as animals, are considered exceptionally sensitive to these harmful influences, perhaps because of their innocence or vulnerability.

Detecting the evil eye

Although it is difficult to trace the exact origin of the concept of the evil eye, it is known to be extremely ancient, with references dating back to several ancient civilizations, notably in Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Over time, the belief spread and adapted to local cultural contexts but is especially present in Mediterranean countries, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

2. What are the sources of the evil eye?

According to some practitioners, the evil eye is often cast unintentionally. A person can, without meaning to, cause harm to another with a simple look, especially when they covet or admire without restraint the luck, beauty, or possession of the other.

Detecting the evil eye

The ability to "cast" the evil eye is not limited to a direct interaction or personal acquaintance between the victim and the source of envy. Indeed, a completely stranger, met by chance, can unintentionally trigger such a curse, highlighting the unpredictable and ever-present nature of this phenomenon. Likewise, the object of envy can be human, relational, material, status-related,...

It is also possible that some individuals have a natural ability to inflict the evil eye, even without conscious intent to harm. In this case, the will can lead to the total downfall of the target. It is therefore essential to detect it and protect oneself from it.

3. What are the symptoms of the evil eye?

The initial signs indicating that one might be affected by the evil eye include several types of physical and emotional manifestations, often difficult to attribute to a specific cause. These symptoms can appear in various forms, including:

  • Persistent fatigue: exhaustion that does not lessen despite rest and seems to drain vital energy, making daily tasks particularly difficult.

  • Constant misfortune: a series of unfortunate events or unfavorable circumstances that follow one another, going beyond mere coincidence and affecting various aspects of personal, professional, or financial life.

  • A feeling of heaviness: an inexplicable weight, both physical and emotional, that hinders movement and mental clarity, making it difficult to express joy or complete activities.

  • Increased clumsiness: an unusual tendency to make mistakes, trip, or cause accidents, even in familiar or routine situations.

  • Frequent forgetfulness: a marked difficulty in remembering recent information, keeping commitments in mind, or finding everyday objects, suggesting a disruption of short-term memory.

  • Sleep disturbances: difficulties falling asleep or maintaining restorative sleep, accompanied by reduced rest quality that does not allow you to feel refreshed upon waking.

  • Repeated nightmares: disturbing or terrifying dreams that repeat with surprising frequency, often filled with symbols or negative emotions, impacting psychological well-being.

These symptoms must of course be put into context. Having one of them does not necessarily mean you have the evil eye, for example if you are not getting enough sleep or if you are naturally clumsy.

Also, if these symptoms are intense and worrying, the first reflex is to talk to your doctor.

That said, if you experience these effects and they continue despite a doctor's advice, it is likely that you are a voluntary or involuntary victim of someone's jealousy.

4. How to detect the evil eye?

To determine if you are affected by the evil eye, a traditional and simple method can be used, requiring common objects that you can easily find.

Here is the necessary material:

  • A container: choose a deep plate, a bowl, or any other vessel that can hold water. The choice of container does not affect the result, but its transparency can make observation easier.

  • Water: water acts as a medium for the experiment, symbolizing clarity and purity. It should be at room temperature to avoid any interference with the behavior of the oil.

  • A few drops of oil: oil, due to its different density from water, will play a central role in the test. A few drops are enough for this practice.

Then follow these steps:

  • Preparation: fill your chosen container halfway with water.

  • Action: gently pour a few drops of oil into the water.

  • Observation: watch carefully how the oil reacts once in contact with the water.

If the drops of oil disperse and sink to the bottom, this could indicate that the evil eye has been cast on you.

If, on the contrary, the drops of oil float and remain on the surface of the water, this suggests that you are not under the influence of the evil eye.

5. How to protect yourself from the evil eye?

Here I will describe two types of protection: proactive (if you feel likely to receive the evil eye soon) or reactive (if you are already a victim of it).

5.1. Proactive protections against the evil eye

In many cultures around the world, there are numerous objects reputed for their power to ward off the evil eye:

  • The Eye of Horus: an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, health, and regeneration. Representing the eye of the god Horus, it offers protection against all forms of misfortune and strengthens the spiritual and physical health of the wearer. I wrote a dedicated note about this symbol over here.

  • Red coral: used since antiquity for its protective properties against the evil eye and negative energies, red coral is also appreciated for bringing courage and optimism.

  • Cacoxenite: this semi-precious stone, often found in Amethyst, is valued for promoting spiritual elevation and protection against negative influences, including the evil eye.

  • Henna: traditionally used in Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures for its protective qualities during ceremonies and weddings, henna is applied in decorative patterns to ward off the evil eye.

  • The Hand of Fatima (or Khamsa): an amulet in the shape of an open hand, common in North African and Middle Eastern cultures, used as protection against the evil eye. It symbolizes blessing, power, and strength, and is often worn as a pendant.

  • The clover: especially the four-leaf clover, is considered a powerful good luck charm capable of repelling the evil eye and attracting luck and prosperity.

  • Garlic: used since Antiquity in many cultures as a powerful protection against the evil eye, garlic is often hung in homes or carried on the person to repel negative energies.

  • The Nazar Eye (or Nazar Boncuk): this blue glass amulet, representing an eye, is very popular in Turkey and surrounding regions. It is used to protect against the evil eye by absorbing or deflecting negative energy. Find my dedicated note on the Nazar Eye here.

5.2. Reactive protections against the evil eye

If the test suggests the presence of the evil eye, several remedies and protections are possible to dissipate negative energies:

  • Storax incense: known for its purifying and protective properties, Storax incense is often used to cleanse spaces of harmful influences.

  • The salt sachet: salt, a symbol of purity and protection, can be carried on the person or placed in strategic locations in the home to ward off the evil eye.

  • The Saint Lucy's Eye pendant: this talisman is reputed for its ability to protect against the evil eye and to bring luck and protection to the wearer.

  • The Turquoise stone: this stone is often associated with protection and defense against the evil eye, thanks to its energetic virtues.

6. In conclusion

I hope the information provided in this note has enlightened you on how to identify the signs of the evil eye and has offered you effective strategies to protect yourself. Knowledge and the wise use of various protective objects and rituals, as described, can play a crucial role in neutralizing negative energies that might weigh on you.

If you suspect you are affected by the evil eye, I strongly encourage you to adopt these protective measures. By surrounding yourself with protective symbols such as the Eye of Horus, the nazar boncuk, or by wearing amulets like the Hand of Fatima, you create an energetic shield around you.

Over time, and thanks to these preventive measures, you should feel a release. And once again, a visit to the doctor remains essential for truly holistic healing.
