What is palo santo and where does it come from?

IN THIS ISSUE...

1. An origin linked to indigenous traditions
2. What makes it different from other woods

palo santo is a sacred wood used for centuries in rituals of purification, grounding, and spiritual connection. Its name means “holy wood” in Spanish. It is not just a simple air freshener: it is a wood full of history, culture, and living practices. It is mainly harvested in South America, especially in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, where it grows naturally in tropical dry forests.

This wood is not harvested from living trees. It must fall naturally and rest on the ground for several years so that its aromatic and energetic properties concentrate in the heart of the trunk. This natural process gives it its characteristic scent, both woody, lemony, and slightly sweet, and its purifying power.

1. An origin linked to indigenous traditions

Palo santo has been used by indigenous peoples for generations, especially by the Quechua, Aymara, and Shuar shamans, in rituals of healing, protection, harmonization, or to accompany ayahuasca ceremonies. It is used to drive away heavy energies, calm restless spirits, or welcome a clearer presence in a place or person.

It is not a wood to burn like ordinary wood. It is respected, activated, used with a clear intention, often in silence or with an inner prayer.

2. What makes it different from other woods

Palo santo is neither dry nor brittle. It is oily, dense, rich in natural essential oil. These oils give it its warm scent, capable of filling a room with a single slow ember. Unlike white sage, which acts as a deep cleansing, palo santo raises the atmosphere, creating a feeling of peace and clarity.

It can be used in smudging, oil, chips, or even resin form depending on tradition or need.

Working with palo santo means entering into a living relationship with the wood, the forest, the breath. And in this ancient scent, a memory still circulates.
