Should you cleanse yourself before a tarot reading?

Should you cleanse yourself before a tarot reading?

IN THIS SUMMARY...

1. Why do we talk about purification before a reading?
2. What actions can help you refocus?
3. Does it change the reading’s outcome?
4. Should you purify every time?

Drawing cards means entering a particular inner space. It’s a moment of silence, clarity, and openness. So the question arises: should you purify yourself before reading the tarot? Does your current state influence the reading? Is a ritual gesture necessary to “do it right”? The answer is simple: it’s not mandatory, but it can sometimes be very helpful. Not to become more “pure,” but to be more present.

1. Why do we talk about purification before a reading?

Because before a reading, you carry tensions, expectations, fears, and projections within you. If you draw cards while agitated, rushed, angry, or too attached to a specific answer, you risk clouding the message. It’s not that the reading will be false. But you won’t be able to listen to it.

Purification is not magical or sacred by principle. It serves to clear your field, to help you settle. It doesn’t change the cards. It changes your perspective on them.

2. What actions can help you refocus?

You don’t need a big ritual. You can breathe quietly for a few moments. Place a hand on your heart. Light a candle. Wash your hands. Sit differently. Turn off your phone. Gently take out the deck without rushing.

You can also pass a light smoke around the deck (sage, incense, sweet herb), or place a stone beside you if you feel the need. These actions don’t purify “energy” as a duty. They mark a threshold. They say: “Here, I make myself available.”

The tarot works better when you are truly present, not when you ask a question between distractions.

3. Does it change the reading’s outcome?

No. The cards fall as they must. But your interpretation changes. A reading done calmly speaks more clearly. You don’t overinterpret. You don’t avoid the card that disturbs you. You look at it. You understand it. Or you accept not to understand immediately.

Purification before a reading is not for protection. It’s for welcoming. It opens a space where the tarot can do its work without unnecessary noise.

4. Should you purify every time?

Not necessarily. If you read regularly in a stable setting, you don’t need to repeat the same actions. But if you feel a block, agitation, or inner pressure, then yes, take a moment to lighten yourself. Not to be “perfect.” Just to be available.

Reading the tarot is like entering a room where you want to hear a voice. You don’t need absolute silence. But you gain a lot by turning down the volume of everything else a little.
