IN THIS SUMMARY...
1. Prepare your space and mind |
Lighting a novena candle is not just making a fire. It is launching a word into time, a silent commitment, a bond that does not break as soon as the flame flickers. The intention set at the moment of lighting gives the novena its full power. Without it, the candle burns but does not speak. With it, every hour becomes a continuous act of presence.
1. Prepare your space and mind
Take a quiet moment, without agitation around you. Ideally, prepare a small altar or a clear corner, even modest: a cloth, an image, a stone, a simple offering. Place the candle on it, without rushing. Breathe. Center yourself.
This is not about performing a grand ceremony. It is about being present. Your hand, your gaze, your breath become the first ritual tools.
2. Formulate a clear intention
You don’t ask for everything. You set a clear intention. It can fit into a single inner sentence. It must be precise, direct, stable. Not a series of contradictory wishes. You choose what you want to support during these nine days. It can be a request for healing, protection, liberation, gratitude, or clarity.
You can say it aloud, write it on paper, or simply think it calmly. The form does not matter. What matters is the coherence between what you want and what you offer.
3. The lighting gesture
Light the candle with a match or a steady flame, without agitation. Watch the flame catch. Observe for a few moments in silence. You can place your hand on your heart, or next to the candle, to seal your intention in this fire.
This moment sets the direction. Once the flame is lit, the work has begun.
You don’t have to repeat your request constantly. It is set in the flame. You can nurture it every day, but the most important is the momentum of the first gesture.
Lighting a novena candle with a clear intention is opening a path. And as long as the flame holds, the path remains open.
