If you are discovering the world of magic in its entirety (high, black, red, blue, green, ...), and even on our online esoteric shop, you will very often come across the terms rituals, spells, incantations, and many others. To bring some order to all this, I offer you this note which allows you to distinguish between what are called magical acts.

1. Invocation

Invocation is a process by which the magician calls upon an entity, a deity, a force, or a spirit to come into them or be present by their side. In doing so, the practitioner seeks to harmonize their own consciousness with the qualities, energies, or attributes of the invoked entity. The goal is often to draw inspiration from these qualities, to receive guidance, protection, or support within the framework of a specific magical work. Invocation can lead to altered states of consciousness, where the magician feels imbued with the energies of the called entity, thus facilitating a direct experience of communion or divine inspiration. It is an act of partnership and integration with the invoked forces, where the magician opens inwardly to receive and integrate subtle influences within their being.

2. Evocation

Unlike Invocation, Evocation is a practice where the magician calls entities, spirits, or forces to appear before them or in a sacred space prepared for the occasion (a Magic Triangle), without seeking to integrate them within themselves. Evocation is often performed within a magic circle or a ritually delimited space, ensuring the magician's protection while allowing them to communicate with the entity. The purpose of Evocation can be to request the entity's help to accomplish a certain magical effect, to obtain information, or to command specific tasks. Evocation requires careful preparation, knowledge of the names, sigils, and characteristics of the entity to be evoked, as well as mastery of protection and control techniques to ensure that interactions remain beneficial and under control.

3. Divination

Divination represents a complex discipline within the occult arts, where the practitioner, often called the magician or diviner, employs various techniques to transcend the boundaries of common sensory perception. In doing so, they seek to access information not directly available through the five senses, thus exploring dimensions beyond everyday experience.

At the heart of these practices are universal symbols and archetypes, which serve as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious, facilitating access to deeper wisdom or hidden messages.

Divination is not limited to predicting the future. It can also offer introspection, aid decision-making, and reveal underlying dynamics in complex situations. By relying on what lies beyond the senses, it encourages the practitioner to develop inner listening and sensitivity to signs and meaningful coincidences that manifest in their life.

4. Enchantment

Enchantment includes all approaches by which the magic practitioner seeks to shape and influence reality according to their will. These approaches can be grouped into two subcategories:

  • Spells are typically formulas or incantations intended to mobilize magical energies to achieve a specific goal. They are generally produced once.

  • Rituals can be seen as sequences of actions, sometimes repeated regularly, often symbolic and performed with a precise intention, aimed at manifesting concrete results in the material world or influencing the subtle planes of existence.

5. Illumination

Illumination is a path of personal transformation and awakening that goes far beyond the mere accumulation of occult knowledge or skills. It is the cornerstone of an inner journey aimed at revealing and realizing the individual's full potential, harmonizing their will, soul, and spirit with the universal laws and invisible forces that orchestrate existence.

This quest for Illumination manifests through a series of transformative practices and experiences, where the individual learns to truly know themselves, understand the mysteries of the universe, and align with a higher order of truth and wisdom. It involves a commitment to spiritual development, where self-suggestion of enchantments plays a crucial role. Through self-enchantment rituals, the practitioner works to transcend their limitations, whether perceived as flaws or weaknesses, and to cultivate desired qualities and abilities. These enchantments act as catalysts for personal growth, facilitating inner transformation and the expansion of consciousness.

At the same time, Illumination relies on the practice of Divination and Invocation to navigate the path toward self-knowledge and cosmic alignment. Divination serves as a compass, offering perspectives and revelations that guide the practitioner in their life choices, decisions, and spiritual evolution. It allows access to levels of understanding that go beyond logic and reason, opening the door to deep and often symbolic wisdom.
