The Sudice

General Description of the Sudice

The Sudice, also known as Sudičky in Czech or Sudjenice in Slovenian, are female spirits from Slavic folklore, often associated with the spinners of fate. These mythological beings decide the destiny of humans at their birth. The Sudice are described as three sisters, similar to the Fates in Greek mythology or the Norns in Norse mythology. They usually appear at the moment of a child's birth to determine their destiny, writing down their joys and sorrows, as well as the length of their life.

They are respected and sometimes feared for their power over fate. The Slavs often made offerings to the Sudice to try to influence their decision or to show gratitude so that the child's destiny would be favorable. Their decisions are final and irrevocable.

Symbols and Appearances

The Sudice are often depicted as three elderly women, dressed in white, carrying threads that they spin or cut to determine the length of a person's life. Their symbolism is closely linked to the thread of life, which they spin, measure, and then cut to signify a person's death. They are associated with objects such as spinning wheels, scissors, and threads, symbolizing their power over destiny.

Genealogy of the Sudice

The Sudice are often seen as independent entities, without direct genealogical ties to other Slavic deities. Their role transcends the divine hierarchy, as they have the power to determine the fate of humans and even, in some versions, that of the gods. Their origin is sometimes unclear, but they are often viewed as representatives of universal destiny, forces that govern the cosmic order.
