Koschei

General Description of Koschei

Koschei the Immortal (or Koschei the Deathless) is one of the most famous antagonists in Slavic folklore, especially in Russian tales. He is known as a powerful evil sorcerer who has the ability to delay his own death by hiding his soul in a series of nested objects, making his destruction extremely difficult. His soul is locked inside a needle, placed inside an egg, hidden in a duck, which is inside a hare, which itself is in a chest buried under a on the mystical island of Buyan. As long as the soul is protected, Koschei is invincible.

Koschei is often depicted as a thin old man, whose frightening appearance reflects his obsession with immortality and his destructive power. He is best known for kidnapping young women, especially princesses, and keeping them captive until a hero intervenes to free them.
