Arthur Edward Waite

Arthur Edward Waite

Arthur Edward Waite was one of the major figures in British occultism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An author, translator, and member of the Golden Dawn, he worked on tarot, Christian Kabbalah, alchemy, initiatory societies, and Western magical literature.

His name remains closely associated with the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, published in 1909 with illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith. This deck gives the Minor Arcana a complete visual narrative and permanently transforms the teaching and practice of tarot in the English-speaking world.

Waite also published several works devoted to occult traditions, including studies of grimoires, ceremonial magic, tarot symbolism, and initiatory societies. His writings reinterpret ancient sources through a Christian, hermetic, and initiatory perspective unique to his work.

The Golden Dawn was a major context in his career. There, Waite encountered an environment shaped by Kabbalah, astrology, tarot, and ceremonial magic before developing a more contemplative approach within his own initiatory organizations.

Divination Tarots make it possible to discover decks derived from or inspired by his system. Divination Books complement this selection with works devoted to the Rider-Waite-Smith and its associated reading methods.

You can also find other authors, schools, and historical texts in the Esoteric Bookshop, placing Arthur Edward Waite within the broader history of Western occultism.

Why choose a book by author?

Esotericism is not limited to an accumulation of practices and beliefs. It is a journey, a quest for knowledge rooted in study and transmission. Great esoteric authors have dedicated their lives to uncovering the mysteries of the invisible world and sharing their discoveries through powerful and inspiring writings. Diving into the complete works of an author allows one to grasp the evolution of their thought and the depth of their approach.

Some have devoted their research to the secrets of magic and symbols, like Eliphas Lévi or Papus. Others have explored Hermetic initiation, such as Franz Bardon. Aleister Crowley revolutionized ritual magic and Kabbalah with a bold approach, while Doreen Valiente and Scott Cunningham restored the prestige of natural magic and pagan traditions.
