Paracelsus, whose full name was Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim, was born in 1493 in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, and died in 1541 in Salzburg. A Swiss physician, philosopher, and alchemist, he was an emblematic figure of the Renaissance who revolutionized medicine by introducing the use of chemical substances in treatments, thereby laying the foundations of modern toxicology. The life of Paracelsus
After his mother died during his childhood, Paracelsus was raised by his father, who passed on his knowledge of medicine, alchemy, and natural sciences. In 1502, Wilhelm von Hohenheim moved with his son to Villach, in Carinthia, a mining region. There, Paracelsus was exposed to the realities of mining and the occupational diseases affecting miners, which influenced his understanding of pathologies related to working conditions. This practical experience, combined with his father’s teaching, laid the foundations for his future medical approach, combining empirical observation with alchemical knowledge.
After his studies, Paracelsus embarked on numerous journeys throughout Europe, visiting countries such as Sweden, Greece, and Portugal. These travels enabled him to observe various medical practices and expand his knowledge.
In 1526, he settled in Strasbourg, then was summoned to Basel to treat the famous printer Johann Froben, who was suffering from gangrene in his leg and had been condemned by his physicians to undergo amputation. Through an appropriate treatment and his own remedies, Paracelsus avoided the amputation and cured him, to the success and astonishment of his peers alike. This achievement earned him an appointment in 1527 as municipal physician and professor at the University of Basel. But things were soon to turn sour.
The dose makes the poison
The doctrines of Galen and Avicenna
First, it is important to explain the medical context of the time, which was governed by two doctrines: those of Galen and Avicenna.
Galen, a Greek physician from the 2nd century AD, developed the theory of the humors, a system that held that the human body was governed by four fundamental fluids: blood (vital energy), yellow bile (drive and anger), black bile (melancholy), and phlegm (coldness and apathy). These humors were associated with the four elements — air, fire, earth, and water — and determined physical and mental health. According to this view, illness resulted from an imbalance of the humors, known as “dyscrasia.” To restore harmony, Galen recommended treatments such as bloodletting, purging, or specific diets, each adapted to the patient’s temperament and presumed needs.

Avicenna, an 11th-century Persian philosopher and physician, developed this theory further in his major work, The Canon of Medicine. By synthesizing Greek, Persian, Indian, and Arab knowledge, Avicenna developed an even more comprehensive medical system. He considered the humors decisive, but also emphasized the importance of environmental factors such as climate, diet, and emotions. He systematized diagnostic approaches such as urine and pulse analysis, while enriching the pharmacopoeia with hundreds of natural remedies. His works introduced more precise concepts of dosage and combinations of medicinal substances.
Breaking with tradition
In the 16th century, European medicine therefore relied heavily on these doctrines. Convinced that these approaches were inadequate and possessing a strong, rebellious character, Paracelsus categorically rejected these teachings. In Basel, in 1527, he performed a symbolic act by publicly burning on Saint John’s Eve works by these great figures of medicine in front of his own students. In his view, these methods neglected the realities of illnesses and patients.
Paracelsus proposed an empirical approach rooted in the direct observation of symptoms and experimentation. He believed that every illness had a specific remedy in nature, accessible through an in-depth knowledge of plants, minerals, and metals.
Another detail, and an important one: Paracelsus taught in German. This made a significant difference because, at the time, the “scholarly” language was Latin. All these factors led him to have many detractors, both among physicians and within the Church, who called him a braggart, a liar, an outsider, or even a drunkard.
The foundation of toxicology
This did not stop Paracelsus, who would become famous for revolutionizing the understanding of medicinal substances through the principle that anything can be either a poison or a remedy, depending on the dose. This idea, summarized in his famous phrase, “Everything is poison, and nothing is without poison; it is the dose that makes the poison,” paved the way for modern toxicology. Through his work, he demonstrated that even substances perceived as dangerous could become beneficial when properly dosed. And vice versa.
For example, he used mercury to treat syphilis, a particularly devastating disease in his time, and explored the healing properties of metals such as antimony.
Alchemical medicine
Paracelsus developed an innovative discipline called iatrochemistry, which combined alchemy and medicine to analyze the chemical processes of the human body and design appropriate treatments. He viewed the body as a chemical system in which illnesses were caused by internal imbalances that had to be corrected with targeted remedies. Unlike the physicians of his time, he favored individualized treatments, believing that each patient was unique and required personalized therapy. He opposed the idea of universal prescriptions and advocated an in-depth understanding of each individual’s temperament and living conditions.

Furthermore, Paracelsus viewed nature as a true pharmacy. He used the doctrine of signatures to associate the characteristics of plants and minerals with specific diseases.
The concept of the three principles
A committed alchemist, Paracelsus introduced the concept of three fundamental principles: sulfur, mercury, and salt. These three symbolic elements replaced the four classical elements — earth, air, fire, and water — to explain transformations of matter. Sulfur represents combustibility and the soul, mercury embodies fluidity and the spirit, while salt symbolizes stability and the body. For Paracelsus, these principles were not merely alchemical concepts; they also formed the foundations of medicine, making it possible to interpret imbalances in the human body as disturbances among these three elements. This alchemical model became a tool for both philosophical and medical analysis, linking the body and matter to universal laws.

In addition, his natural philosophy was based on a holistic vision of the universe. Paracelsus considered humanity a microcosm, a miniature replica of the macrocosm that is the universe. This universal correspondence meant that everything existing in the external universe had an equivalent in the human body. This approach incorporated the influences of the stars, the elements, and natural forces into the functioning of the body, while emphasizing the role of invisible energies. For Paracelsus, health depended on harmony between these internal energies and cosmic forces. This viewpoint also influenced his medical practice, reinforcing the idea that remedies had to resonate with the universe in order to be effective.
Paracelsus expressed his ideas in major works combining alchemy, medicine, and philosophy. Among them, Paragranum and Opus Paramirum hold a central place. In Paragranum, he criticized the foundations of traditional medicine and proposed a new method based on four pillars: philosophy, astronomy, alchemy, and the physician’s virtue. This text constituted a radical reworking of medicine, connecting it to a deeper understanding of natural and spiritual forces. Opus Paramirum, meanwhile, explored the causes of diseases and ways of treating them based on alchemical principles. In it, Paracelsus reaffirmed his commitment to empirical and experimental medicine while incorporating metaphysical elements.
These two works were part of a collection of more than 350 books that Paracelsus is said to have written (230 on philosophy, 40 on medicine, 12 on politics, 7 on mathematics and astrology, and 66 on magic and the secret arts). Whether this is legend or fact, we will never know, because this count apparently came from one of his students.
A mysterious end of life
Paracelsus died on September 24, 1541, in Salzburg, at the age of 48. The circumstances surrounding his death remain mysterious and have given rise to various speculations.
According to some sources, Paracelsus was the victim of an assault during a banquet, orchestrated by medical rivals. During the altercation, he supposedly fell and suffered a fatal head injury. A postmortem examination allegedly revealed a fracture of the temporal bone, suggesting traumatic injury.
Other hypotheses suggest that Paracelsus died as a result of an illness. Shortly before his death, he is said to have bequeathed his possessions to the poor of the city, a gesture interpreted by some as an awareness of an impending end caused by a serious condition.
After his death, Paracelsus was buried in the cemetery of St. Sebastian’s Church in Salzburg. In 1752, his remains were transferred inside the church, where a commemorative plaque honors his memory.
Another mystery surrounds his name: the most widespread hypothesis suggests that Paracelsus derives from the Latin para, meaning “against,” “beyond,” or “superior to,” and Celsus, a Roman physician of the 1st century known for his medical writings. Thus, Paracelsus could be translated as “superior to Celsus,” reflecting his desire not merely to surpass traditional medicine, but to contradict it.
To conclude and summarize the life and character of Paracelsus (he was never married and had no children): “Nature did not weave me with much subtlety. Nor is it customary in my country to use silk threads. We were not raised on figs, mead, and wheat bread, but on cheese, milk, and oat bread: such fare does not produce subtle young men. And what we received in our youth remains attached to us until the end of our days. Compared with delicate people, clean as cats and exceedingly refined, we appear coarse. Nor do we get along well, we who grew up among pinecones, with those who were raised in silk garments and by women’s hands. ”
