In life, certain people sometimes have a harmful influence on our emotional, spiritual, or even physical well-being. Whether it involves toxic relationships, constant conflicts, or negative energies, it becomes necessary to protect ourselves to preserve our personal balance. In such cases, distancing ourselves from these individuals and taking steps to protect ourselves is essential. One of the most popular rituals is the freezer spell from Hoodoo magic, which is simple and (very) effective.
Why banish someone from your life?
Banishment in a spiritual or esoteric context is motivated by the need to protect yourself from the negative influences they may exert. This can take the form of toxic behavior, manipulation, or simply harmful energies that disrupt a person's emotional or spiritual balance. Banishment is not intended to cause harm, but to sever a harmful connection and regain inner peace. In white magic, this type of ritual is often seen as a defensive measure, a way to preserve your well-being while avoiding destructive actions. It involves putting an end to a negative influence, neutralizing harmful behavior, or distancing yourself from people whose presence has become burdensome or toxic.
How does this banishment work?
The freezer spell gives form to an intention to create distance through a simple symbolic act. Prepare a writing surface and clearly state what you want to leave behind. A dedicated parchment gives this intention a specific place before you follow the ritual steps. Visualization accompanies this moment of recentering; the act serves as a personal reminder to support your decision to set boundaries.
Here is how it works: the chosen object (a piece of paper with the person's name, a photograph, or another personal symbol called a "taglock") becomes a receptacle for the energy you want to eliminate. You must visualize intensely what this object represents and associate it with the obstacle or harmful influence. This is the heart of the ritual: the visualization, through which you embody the negative energy in this symbolic object. Then, by placing this object in the freezer, you freeze the influence in question, making it inert and unable to act against you. This freezing process symbolizes putting the effects of this person or situation in your life on hold or blocking them.
Freezer banishing ritual
Given its popularity, there are many variations of this ritual. Here I present the most "traditional" version from the Hoodoo tradition.
Ingredients needed
Find the ingredients available at our Aeternum esoteric shop. In short, you will need:
- 1 solid black candle
- 1 bottle of holy water
- 1 container (that can hold water)
- 1 sheet of parchment
- 1 writing quill
- 1 Dragon's Blood magical ink
Note that this ritual should be performed within a protective circle (elemental, draconic, or otherwise). Only the ingredients for the ritual itself are listed here.
Favorable timing
This ritual should be performed during the waning phase of the moon.
Steps for the banishment ritual
To perform this freezer banishment ritual, follow these detailed steps:
-
Cast your circle: before you begin, create a protective circle around yourself. This helps focus the energies and protect you during the ritual.
-
Invoke Hecate: light a candle and invoke the goddess Hecate, known for her powers of protection and transition. Use this invocation: « O Hecate, goddess of renewal, help me follow my path by banishing what harms me ».
-
Write down what you want to banish: take a piece of parchment or paper and clearly write down what you want to get rid of (a person, a situation, or a negative influence). Say aloud: « XXX, by this act, I seal your words; may my will prevail over yours. »
-
Immerse and seal: dip the paper in holy water to symbolize the dissolution of this influence. Then place it in the container, fill it with water (not all the way, to prevent it from bursting), and seal it tightly. This process symbolizes capturing and neutralizing the energy or person you are banishing.
-
End the ritual: close the circle and place the container in the freezer. This final act symbolically "freezes" the harmful influence and prevents it from having any hold over you.
-
Release what remains: when you feel the ritual has achieved its purpose, remove the container from the freezer and dispose of what remains, either by throwing its contents away somewhere distant, or by burning or burying the paper.
There is no specific timeframe for seeing results; you will see and feel them intuitively (generally within one lunar cycle). Be sure to release the container once the ritual is complete to avoid unwanted effects.
