We are proud to present our new creation: the Rúnskjöldr runic candle. We agree, it is not exactly easy to pronounce, but what matters is its role in your protection rituals, as it will help you focus your energy to create a shield around you. Let us introduce it to you!

1. What is the Rúnskjöldr runic candle?

Germanic and Nordic peoples used runes not only as a means of divination, but above all as an invocation tool in specific rituals. This is why they were often seen engraved on walls or Viking weapons.

Following this principle, we created this candle, with the three protection runes engraved directly into the wax on the front. Its rectangular shape also has a meaning: solidity, structure, and balance.

It is also colored throughout in black, the color associated with personal protection.

2. What is the meaning of the Rúnskjöldr protection candle?

Let us begin by introducing the three Viking runes engraved on it:

  • Algiz (ᛉ) is a powerful protection rune. Symbolizing defense and safety, it acts as a spiritual shield against external threats and negative energies. In Norse mythology, this rune is associated with the image of an elk or deer antler, signifying a call for vigilance and connection with the forces of nature to protect against danger. It is used in amulets or talismans to strengthen a sacred or personal space, forming an invisible barrier that keeps unwanted influences at bay.

  • Eihwaz (ᛇ) embodies endurance and resilience. Associated with the yew, a sacred tree in Nordic culture symbolizing life, death, and rebirth, Eihwaz reminds us of the inner strength and perseverance needed to get through difficult periods. This rune is often used in practices intended to strengthen the mind in the face of challenges or to prepare for obstacles ahead. Eihwaz also encourages alignment with natural cycles, helping us draw from a constant and renewed source of strength.

  • Tiwaz (ᛏ) is the rune of justice, courage, and protection in times of conflict. Associated with the god Tyr, the god of war and justice in Norse mythology, this rune symbolizes the honor and sacrifice required for a just cause. Tiwaz is used in protection rituals to invoke courage in the face of adversity and the ability to overcome trials with integrity. It guides us toward just actions and protects those who seek to defend noble values and the truth.

Its name, Rúnskjöldr, is also a personal protection term derived from Old Norse, where rún means "secret" and skjöldr means "shield".

Here is a phonetic guide to each part:

  • Rún: [ˈruːn] – "Rún" is pronounced with a rolled "R" followed by a long "u", close to "roun" in French but with a more drawn-out "u".

  • skjöld: [ʃkjoːld] – The combination "skj" is pronounced "sh" followed by a soft "k". The "ö" is a sound midway between "o" and "e", as in Swedish or Icelandic, with a lengthened vowel.

  • final r: [ʀ] – The final "r" is rolled or almost silent, depending on the linguistic variant.

3. Where is the Rúnskjöldr runic candle made?

Here in Brittany, we make each candle ourselves, drawing on our artisanal expertise. We selected high-quality soy wax for its slow, natural burn, without releasing toxins or soot, offering a healthier and more environmentally friendly experience. The dye we use is also carefully selected to be non-toxic, ensuring that the candle retains its vibrant color without any health risk. For the wick, we choose pure cotton, free from lead and chemicals, to ensure a stable, clean flame. This choice of materials reflects our commitment to environmentally friendly products and the well-being of our customers, while honoring Breton craftsmanship.

4. How do you use the Rúnskjöldr runic candle?

4.1. On your altar

Discover our Rúnskjöldr protection candle

Place the candle at the center of your altar, surrounded by other symbolic objects aligned with the intention of protection. You can add protective stones, such as black tourmaline or obsidian, symbols of your protective deity, or natural elements connected to the deity being invoked, such as plants or sacred incense.

4.2. In a protection ritual

Including this candle in a ritual helps focus protective energy. Cast a circle of protection around your ritual space, then light the candle while reciting a prayer or invocation to the protective deity or force you are calling upon. As the candle burns, visualize a shield of protective light surrounding your space and yourself, thereby amplifying the protective energy you wish to attract.

4.3. With a magical oil

To enhance its protective effects, you can anoint the candle with a protection oil before lighting it. Apply the oil from the base toward the wick while visualizing the protective intention infusing the wax. Herbal oils such as rosemary, sage, or angelica oil are ideal for this type of ritual. This step enhances the protective effect by adding the power of herbalism and essential oils to your magical intention.
