Saint Teresa of Avila

2 min read

Teresa of Avila is one of the great voices of 16th-century Christian contemplative life. A Carmelite reformer, writer, and founder, she left works that describe prayer, inner difficulties, and the place of humility in prayer with precision.

Vocation Carmelite, reformer, and Doctor of the Church
Period 1515–1582
Celebration October 15

Life and historical landmarks

Teresa of Jesus lived in Spain in the 16th century and initiated a reform of Carmel with new foundations. The Book of Her Life, The Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle convey her experience of prayer and her discernment. Her work combined governance, travel, human relationships, and writing. She was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970.

Born in 1515, Teresa entered Carmel and then undertook a reform aimed at a more recollected and fraternal life. She founded monasteries with remarkable practical sense. The Book of Her Life, The Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle develop images that make the inner life intelligible without reducing it to accounts of ecstasies. John of the Cross became one of her principal collaborators in the reform movement.

Transmission of stories and traditions

The stages of prayer do not constitute a ranking of people's worth. Extraordinary experiences are not the goal to pursue. Teresa recommends discernment and gives a decisive place to active love of one's neighbor.

The arrow, flaming heart, book, and Carmelite habit are Teresa's traditional attributes. Her representation in Baroque sculpture strongly influenced religious art. Proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, she is celebrated on October 15.

Iconography and attributes

The feather, book, and dove evoke her teaching. The heart pierced by an arrow refers to the transverberation she describes in her autobiography and to its artistic reception.

Spirituality and heritage

Her understanding of prayer emphasizes a faithful relationship. Slow reading, a time of silence, and examining the effects of prayer on daily relationships offer a more grounded approach than seeking sensations.

Christian feast and memorial

The date indicated refers to the Roman rite or the specified local observance. The actual celebration may vary according to the calendar of the year. In the Catholic faith, asking a saint's intercession means asking them to pray to God; it does not attribute independent power to them. An image or devotional object may accompany this practice without being necessary for prayer.
