Julio takes up the Saint Benedict medal with its two sides. The image of the saint and the cross form a whole that his notice associates with the spiritual protection of people and places.
Read the symbolism
One side depicts Saint Benedict; the other bears a cross and the letters of his formulas. The two reproductions are brought together here to preserve this double reading. The medal belongs to a devotional tradition predating Julio: his work takes up its explanation and application.
The attributed effects
In the notice, Julio attributes to it protection against spirits he considers evil. He extends this protection to houses, buildings that shelter animals, and fields. These attributions belong to the religious and spiritual vocabulary of his text.
Use according to Julio
Julio describes two uses: wearing the medal or placing it in a location. He requests a particular blessing and consecration by a priest. The physical presence of the object and its religious preparation are therefore linked in his system.
A personal reading
Compare the two sides: the figure of the saint on one side, the cross and letters on the other. For a personal reading, you can reflect on what protection means concretely in your home, then associate this intention with a prayer for peace.
The source and variants
The old notice refers to the first volume, p. 255 and following. This medal should not be confused with the Pentagram, for which Julio also describes a two-sided metal version.
