What does Metatron's Cube mean?

3 min read

The Cube of Metatron is a diagram composed of thirteen points derived from an arrangement of circles, connected to one another by segments. Its dense network of lines makes it possible to recognize several polygonal figures and projections of solids. The name is borrowed from Metatron, a major figure in Jewish traditions of visions of the Throne and the Hekhalot. Yet no known medieval text devoted to Metatron describes this modern diagram of thirteen circles and seventy-eight segments.

Construction Thirteen circle centers
Segments 78 connections between every pair of centers
Borrowed name Metatron, angel of Jewish traditions
Common use Contemporary sacred geometry
A note of caution No established medieval attribution for the drawing

How is the Cube of Metatron constructed?

It begins with the arrangement called the Fruit of Life, which provides thirteen centers. Each center is then connected to every other center by a straight line. This rule produces 78 distinct segments.

The drawing is called a cube, but its first form is flat: it is not the geometric net of an isolated cube, and the volumes must be interpreted from selected projections.

Where does the angel’s name come from?

Metatron appears in Jewish literature on celestial visions devoted to the heavenly palaces and the vision of the Throne. His name then enters multiple esoteric and Kabbalistic traditions.

However, the history of this angelic figure must be distinguished from the history of the diagram: the presence of Metatron in ancient texts does not establish the antiquity of the Cube that bears his name today.

What solids can be recognized in its pattern?

The lines contain figures that make it possible to study triangles, hexagons, cubic forms, and projections of solids. Several contemporary manuals identify the five Platonic solids in it.

However, a plane projection is not enough to guarantee that all these polyhedra are drawn with their exact three-dimensional proportions. The projection and the edges used must be specified before claiming geometric identity.

Can it be dated to medieval Kabbalah?

The diagram is regularly presented as an ancient Kabbalistic secret. This attribution requires a manuscript that actually shows the figure with its name and construction.

In the absence of such evidence, an ancient or medieval lineage remains unproven. The documented spread of the name and design belongs to the sacred geometry literature of the late twentieth century.

Why has this symbol become central to modern occultism?

Metatron’s Cube combines a complex appearance with a simple construction rule. The multiplication of lines creates an impression of geometric totality, which encourages its use on jewelry, covers, and meditative objects.

It also makes it possible to present a coherent progression from circles to solids. This contemporary educational value stands on its own, without needing to attribute powers to it passed down from ancient Egypt.

Historical sources and reference points

Wolfram MathWorld, “Flower of Life” describes the relationship between the thirteen centers and the diagram called Metatron’s Cube. “Platonic Solid” provides definitions of the five regular polyhedra, which are useful for checking geometric correspondences.
