What does Gurdjieff’s enneagram mean?

3 min read

Gurdjieff's enneagram is a nine-point figure arranged on a circle and connected by two patterns: a triangle between 9, 3, and 6, and a continuous line following 1-4-2-8-5-7. Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff used this symbol at the beginning of the 20th century in his teaching on the laws of development and transformation. Originally, it was not a chart of the nine personalities: that second tradition emerged later, particularly through Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo.

Points 9
Triangular pattern 9–3–6
Inner pattern 1–4–2–8–5–7
Initial dissemination Teaching of G. I. Gurdjieff, beginning of the 20th century
Reinterpretation Personality enneagram, second half of the 20th century

How are the nine points connected?

The nine points form a numbered ring. Points 9, 3, and 6 form an equilateral triangle. The other six are connected in the order 1, 4, 2, 8, 5, 7, then return to 1.

This second pattern corresponds to the repeating decimal associated with fractions whose denominator is seven. Together, these elements provided Gurdjieff with a diagram for presenting processes and their internal relationships.

When does it appear in modern sources?

The enneagram was taught by Gurdjieff in his groups at the beginning of the 20th century. Piotr Ouspensky provides an important presentation of it in Fragments of an Unknown Teaching, published in English in 1949 under the title In Search of the Miraculous.

Carole Cusack's academic research places the sign in this historical context and examines the transmission narratives that later attributed several ancient origins to it.

What is the symbol used for in Gurdjieff's teachings?

Gurdjieff’s system deals in particular with rhythms, transformation, and relationships between different stages of a process. The enneagram becomes a synthetic representation of these relationships.

Its lines and triangle should be interpreted based on the explanations specific to this teaching rather than through a simple numerology of the numbers one to nine.

Why does the modern enneagram speak of nine psychological types?

In the 20th century, Oscar Ichazo developed psychological correspondences that were subsequently disseminated and reworked by Claudio Naranjo. Many contemporary works deal primarily with these nine types.

This system does not constitute the initial definition given by Gurdjieff. The two uses share a drawing but do not teach the same things.

Why is the supposed antiquity of the enneagram debated?

The sign is frequently linked, without evidence, to ancient Sufi brotherhoods, the Kabbalah, or the Desert Fathers. The study of available texts does not confirm a documented graphic continuity from these traditions.

The symbol has an authentic esoteric history in the 20th century. This history is interesting enough without attributing an impossible-to-establish past to it.

Carole M. Cusack, “The Enneagram: G. I. Gurdjieff’s Esoteric Symbol,” Aries, vol. 20, 2020, p. 31-54 traces the symbol’s dissemination, its use by Gurdjieff, and its subsequent transformation into a personality typology.
