Originally, José Gregorio Hernández (1864-1919) was a Venezuelan physician renowned for treating the poorest people free of charge. His reputation for holiness developed immediately after his death, and he became one of Venezuela's most venerated religious figures. He was beatified in 2021 and then canonized by the Catholic Church in 2025. He is now considered the patron saint of doctors, medical students, and the sick.
Interestingly, he is also now part of the American Hoodoo pantheon through the integration of Hispanic and Caribbean traditions. He is therefore closely associated with rootworking in healing rituals, and is even regarded as a healing spirit and a folk doctor while also being recognized by the Church.
He was characterized by his understated elegance: black suit, white shirt, black tie, and black hat.
